I'm kinda trying to wrap my head around the fact that you feel second-hand embarrassment for De Niro but also think it's wrong for people to find this bit amusing.

If it's not funny for a dude to go around in a dress, then why do you feel embarrassed?

What? You objection makes no sense.

The fact that OP feels embarrassed by this scene implies that OP finds something wrong, or at least weird, with manly men cavorting about in dresses. Yet OP objects to portraying manly men cavorting about in dresses as laughable.

My problem is that OP doesn't actually seem to be any better than the people s/he's criticizing.

Possibly they feel that there's nothing wrong with it but are cringing at the hypothetical reactions?

I know that there's stuff I'm not ashamed of that I'd feel mortified about if someone on TV was the butt of a joke for doing.

Ah. I see your point.

On further reflection, I think part of the reason I object is because the scene reads so differently to me. It's not funny because it's a man who likes wearing women's clothing; it's funny because appearances aren't everything, and assumptions can prove utterly wrong.

The captain's crossdressing isn't treated as being strange in the film; it's simply unexpected. It's a part of who he is, and it's accepted without question both by his crew and by the main characters. That's why the OP's embarrassment rubs me the wrong way -- if the film treats it as something that's not worth being embarrassed over, then why should OP?

+1 And the acceptance by his crew and the main characters without question was the most moving bit of the film for me.

I get where the OP is coming from. I watch that scene and it seems overdone. Because the acting comes across as unreal, he seems like a stereotype of a crossdresser.

So whether or not someone somewhere knows someone who acts exactly like this, someone somewhere else has only seen it by hetero same sex dressing guys playing a stereotype.

Hence the second-hand embarrassment.

Like I said to the anon above, I've realized that part of why I was bothered by the OP is because the scene read so differently to me. It's unexpected that the captain would be a crossdresser, but not unaccepted. The acting came across differently to me, as well.

So, perhaps it is a matter of perspective.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
... I feel that maybe you're over thinking this a bit. It's entirely possible and logically sound to:

1) feel that the whole "manly man in a dress" isn't funny and
2) feel embarrassed that an actor as renowned as Robert DeNiro is in a role where he's the "manly man in a dress" and people are supposed to gigglesnort themselves silly.

If OP finds the scene objectionable because it's a lame gag, then it seems reasonable that the OP might cringe on behalf of the actor who has to play such an objectionable scene containing the lame gag.

You're probably right. I overthink a lot of things.

I took it to mean, "if you think shaming a man for wearing a dress is dumb, then why do you feel secondhand embarrassment from him?"

I would agree but I'm not sure that's what OP's getting at. They didn't say the joke was dumb because it was shaming a man for wearing a dress - just that it was overused.
