I'm kinda trying to wrap my head around the fact that you feel second-hand embarrassment for De Niro but also think it's wrong for people to find this bit amusing.

If it's not funny for a dude to go around in a dress, then why do you feel embarrassed?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
What? You objection makes no sense.

The fact that OP feels embarrassed by this scene implies that OP finds something wrong, or at least weird, with manly men cavorting about in dresses. Yet OP objects to portraying manly men cavorting about in dresses as laughable.

My problem is that OP doesn't actually seem to be any better than the people s/he's criticizing.

I took it to mean, "if you think shaming a man for wearing a dress is dumb, then why do you feel secondhand embarrassment from him?"

I would agree but I'm not sure that's what OP's getting at. They didn't say the joke was dumb because it was shaming a man for wearing a dress - just that it was overused.

I just read this book about a week ago, and then looked at the movie on wikipedia. When this part was mentioned, I actually thought maybe someone had vandalized the article. I barely remember anything about the captain in the book.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Captain Shakespeare isn't in the book, other than maybe a mention.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
There was an airship, and it presumably had a captain, but he wasn't named or given any kind of character. Hence why I barely remember him.

De Niro so clearly has no problems doing it, and he sells it so completely, that it's just hard for me to feel any second hand embarrassment for him. He's made his choice and he's decided to do this and he's 100% committed. That's also why I think the scene works - I can completely understand where you're coming from but De Niro just commits so hard to it all that it ends up working for me.

Basically this. It makes me respect him even more and that makes me feel okay about laughing at the scene that's clearly intended to be funny.

This. Not to mention that his crew is totally cool with it, not even in a "wow! that's so unique! let's have a ~special moment~" but a "we always figured and it doesn't change anything" way.

IDK, I guess what I'm trying to say is that even though those individual scenes were flamboyant and played for laughs, they were presented as "normal" in the context of the film and I liked that.

I really liked this, too.

Here's the thing OP: De Niro would NOT have done that scene if he didn't want to.

And for fuck's sake, he was very feminine through out the film once you figured out he was a good guy. What was wrong with the character doing something he obviously loved? even if it was meant to be comedic, it was great and I loved seeing him have FUN.

There are irl guys who are like his character. So why the secondhand embarrassment?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the book or seen the movie, but I've seen the gif of this scene many times, and I love it because he just looks like he's enjoying himself so damn much.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, how dare a character who gets enjoyment out of this kind of thing do this kind of thing. Methinks you are one of those people who can't stand when guys are remotely feminine, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen it, but is it really embarrassing?

More embarrassing than the, erm, "side effect" and "antidote" scene in Little Fockers?

Watch and see. It's a great scene, though without the context of the rest of the movie, it may seem a bit much.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the whole point of that was that he could be effeminate and fucking badass at the same time?
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-04-19 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, really. And, even better, he thinks cross dressing is something shameful and tries to hide it, but his crew knows and doesn't care at all.

I was just embarrassed for him because the bad guys were behind him and he didn't see them. I was like "Oh, no!"

I get annoyed every time they use the term "woopsie" for him. But yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about that scene. Sometimes I like it for what it is, sometimes I'm a little uncomfortable that when he's dressing in outfits like that he's taken to the sword and put in an effeminate position. It always ends up coming together in the end for me, but I see where you're coming from.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Why couldn't they have had him kick ass in THAT outfit?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair to him, he was ambushed, music drowning out the fighting outside, and his sword is nowhere near.

I can see your point but I still think the twist that his crew don't care and still think he's a fearsome pirate leader is very sweet.
