haha I have never heard this hate (I'm in the "pre-pubescent when the movie came out" club), but I can imagine it...f!s wasn't around, but if anything even remotely similar existed, I'm sure tons of people were going on about how overrated it was.

People always go on about the movie being overrated, but I feel like I'm the only one who thinks it's tasteless, too.
You do NOT use a massive tragedy as a framework for your little romance story.
(This is the same reason I didn't watch the recent Pompeii movie)

So you dislike every movie set on the Titanic that came before it; every movie set in an actual war; every movie set during any civil war or revolution; every movie set during any significant thing that has ever happened in history and that resulted in real lives being lost...

Basically, you hate historical fiction and think it's all tasteless?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it is at least a little tasteless.

But the weird thing is, I don't see Titanic as a love story at all. I see it as a story about one woman's freedom, which involved romance... and 1500 or so people dying horribly in an icy ocean in the middle of the night :P

Hahaha, I was going to write this exact comment and you saved me the effort.

But yeah, one of the reasons I love the movie so much is, IMHO, it's not so much about the romance as it is Rose's journey of self-discovery and freedom. She's the one who tells the story, i's almost all her POV, and when Jack ultimately dies, it's not the end for her. She takes what she's learned, makes a new life for herself, and finds herself a new love.

Which does, of course, involve 1500 or so people dying horribly in an icy ocean in the middle of the night.

And she had a very bad ass new life indeed.

I've got no dog in that particular race, since I haven't actually seen Titanic. (GASP, I KNOW.) It's just a trend I've noticed.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Titanic happened like a hundred years ago. While I get that there are still people living who were affected by the tragedy, there's almost no one there to offend. And frankly, if you think the movie was nothing but a little romance story, I'm going to guess you haven't seen it. Romance was center, but there was so much more to the movie, and the scenes during the sinking were horrific.

And Pompeii?

I mean, I get what you're saying, but why can't drama/tragedy be the framework for any story? The only way I could see it being tasteless is if there are real people affected by it still. I'm all for humanizing history and not forgetting that real people died at Pompeii or whatever but that seems like a real reach.
