You do NOT use a massive tragedy as a framework for your little romance story.
(This is the same reason I didn't watch the recent Pompeii movie)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)Basically, you hate historical fiction and think it's all tasteless?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:37 am (UTC)(link)But the weird thing is, I don't see Titanic as a love story at all. I see it as a story about one woman's freedom, which involved romance... and 1500 or so people dying horribly in an icy ocean in the middle of the night :P

But yeah, one of the reasons I love the movie so much is, IMHO, it's not so much about the romance as it is Rose's journey of self-discovery and freedom. She's the one who tells the story, i's almost all her POV, and when Jack ultimately dies, it's not the end for her. She takes what she's learned, makes a new life for herself, and finds herself a new love.
Which does, of course, involve 1500 or so people dying horribly in an icy ocean in the middle of the night.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)And Pompeii?
I mean, I get what you're saying, but why can't drama/tragedy be the framework for any story? The only way I could see it being tasteless is if there are real people affected by it still. I'm all for humanizing history and not forgetting that real people died at Pompeii or whatever but that seems like a real reach.
