I was the same with Watership Down at about the same age. I read the first copy til it fell apart, and got a new one. I lived in the country and felt very 'close' to the world of the book. It was also not all that far away from where I lived, just the next county, with the same kind of landscape. It got me through some bad times, that book. I'll always love it! :)
