I don't see why you feel this needs to be a secret, OP. "Watership Down" is a great book!

Okay, so you got lucky in that your childhood favourite is something actually good and you don't have to be ashamed about loving it. Why is that a secret?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoot, that's one of my Desert Island Books. I've probably read it 25-30 times. No reason yours should be secret, although maybe mine should be LOL. Hazel is awesome.

Seconding the "why is this a secret?"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Guessing "I aspire to be like a fictional rabbit" and/or "my favorite book as a kid was a dark account of rabbit life and death (heavy on the death)."

I was the same with Watership Down at about the same age. I read the first copy til it fell apart, and got a new one. I lived in the country and felt very 'close' to the world of the book. It was also not all that far away from where I lived, just the next county, with the same kind of landscape. It got me through some bad times, that book. I'll always love it! :)

I'm going to add to the "why is this a secret?" chorus.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
watership down is amazing and why would this even be a secret? do people make fun of you because it's about bunnies? it's brilliant.

I read a lot of Richard Adams when I was about 11. This one, The Plague Dogs, and Traveller are still on the list of all-time favorites. Richard Adams is such an awesome author. Perfect for children and adults.

Hazel is a great character. But for me, Bigwig is my all time favorite. A total bad ass, with really well-done character development.

pantswarrior: Spock thinks everything is "fascinating". (fascinating)

I was all about Fiver. ...I just realized I connected with him in basically the same way and for the same reasons I connected with Raistlin like 8 years later when I got into Dragonlance. And now I'm wondering if there was some inspiration there...

It's a classic book. And I am still totally in love with Campion.

I feel weird the Watership Down didn't really click with me, I'm all about Plague Dogs when it comes to Richard Adams.

Yet people think I really like Watership Down, just because I like rabbits. hahaha?

Fellow Plague Dogs fan. *fist-bump*

Rowf is one of my all time favorite literary characters. His plight really got to me. I love Snitter too, but not as much as Rowf.

I would wonder how I submitted a secret without my knowledge, but:

- I have never made my early reading, my reading that book at age 6, or my lifelong love of bunnies a secret
- I actually remember there was a point when I was two years old when I looked at my stuffed animals and was sad that I had more bears, cats, and dogs than the two rabbits I had at that point, and I really wanted more rabbits. My obsession with Watership Down was because I was already obsessed with rabbits. :D

Glad to hear from another longtime rabbit person! They are simply the greatest little guys, and so few people really understand or appreciate them as they deserve.

Edit: Also, that's the cover of the copy I have had for like 20 years... currently loaned to my little brother, who's in his teens. =)

Totally agree with you about bunnies not being appreciated as much as they deserve.
I mean, I never wanted / thought about having a pet bunny before actually being given a tiny ball of fur, but it's been 2 years and I'm still in love with her :)

This secret seems weirdly defensive. I hope you didn't get teased for liking bunnies. But seriously, Watership Down is a great book and made a huge impact on me when I read it as a child.

Watching the cartoon movie of this in the 80s fucked me up for life. I'm still too traumatized to read the book.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
We used to be able to get some sweets and rent a video on a Friday night (rent a video... that makes me feel so old!).

When I was about six, it was my turn to choose and this movie with a bunny on the front was in the kids section. Yup, it was Watership Down and I think I traumatised myself and my sisters.

About two years later I chose Grave of the Fireflies, which was also in the kids section. Same reaction.

Oh man. That is some bad luck there, anon. D:

The reason I read the book at 6 was basically because the movie was coming on TV, but it was at a time when I wasn't going to be able to watch it, but "MOOOOMMMM IT'S ABOUT RABBITS I HAVE TO SEE IT ;_;" So my mom observed it was based on a book, and bought me a copy. I think I may have dodged a bullet, because actually SEEING some of the stuff transpire as opposed to just reading about it would probably have ruined me. (I mean, there's that one issue of The Maxx which still upsets me if I think about it in much detail, and when they animated that series, I was like "Well I know one episode I won't be watching..." And that was when I was 18.)

Joining in with 'Why is this a secret?' because Watership Down is a great book. The movie terrified the crap out of me as a little kid so I didn't end up reading the book until high school when I checked it out from the library on a random whim. I was about halfway through when I bought my own copy because I liked it so much. It's one of those books I can read anytime no matter what mood I'm in and get sucked right in.

Top five favorite book. I *love* Watership Down. I re-read at least once a year.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
For those who are asking, the reason this is a secret is because I was SIX when I read this book for the first (and second, and third, and, like, 10th time) and people tend to call me a liar/exaggerator or get mad at me for (as they assume) trying to show off that I could read and understand adult novels at that age.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Six isn't unusual, those people were dicks.
