pantswarrior: Jasmine, Dusty, and Pepper in a bunnypile while undergoing a bunny bonding session. (bunnies)

I would wonder how I submitted a secret without my knowledge, but:

- I have never made my early reading, my reading that book at age 6, or my lifelong love of bunnies a secret
- I actually remember there was a point when I was two years old when I looked at my stuffed animals and was sad that I had more bears, cats, and dogs than the two rabbits I had at that point, and I really wanted more rabbits. My obsession with Watership Down was because I was already obsessed with rabbits. :D

Glad to hear from another longtime rabbit person! They are simply the greatest little guys, and so few people really understand or appreciate them as they deserve.

Edit: Also, that's the cover of the copy I have had for like 20 years... currently loaned to my little brother, who's in his teens. =)

Totally agree with you about bunnies not being appreciated as much as they deserve.
I mean, I never wanted / thought about having a pet bunny before actually being given a tiny ball of fur, but it's been 2 years and I'm still in love with her :)
pantswarrior: Jasmine-bunny is cute and round. (jasmine)

See that's the thing - people don't REALIZE they're so much more than just "a tiny ball of fur". They have so much attitude and personality, and despite the fact they're not as vocal as cats and dogs, they DO vocalize (my Jasmine growls ferociously when she's impatient, and Dusty grunts like crazy when he's happy), and communicate so effectively without it. I hear people say they're boring, they're not playful, they stink (I have cats too, and the cats' boxes get stinky WAY faster than the rabbits')...

But then you meet a rabbit and take the time to get to know them, and they're such amazing complex and sometimes shockingly (and frustratingly) intelligent little creatures! ...And the fact that they can do things like dance around the room kicking up their heels, or turn into a perfectly round puffball with two long ears sticking up at a ridiculous angle, that doesn't hurt. ;)

Precisely! They never tell you how interesting rabbits can be and that's a shame. My Scarlett recognizes her name and her ears twitch whenever I call her - I remember once talking about Gone with the Wind on the phone for a project and she heard her name and came thinking I was calling her. So adoooorable! She likes to growl when my mother visits and tries to touch her things but then she never liked my mother much. She purrs when I stroke her forehead and scratch her ears.
And rabbits don't stink if you change their litter box often enough. My Scarlett likes to cuddle in bed, which shocks people because I'm a clean freak, and she never smells. She sheds though.
She likes to follow me around and "attack" me when I'm working to get cuddles. And she's very stubborn.
But people don't believe rabbits can do that kind of things as they are not "real" pet and should be kept in cages - I totally disagree btw.
Sorry for boring you with my gushing but I love talking about my bunny.
How many do you have? Where do you keep them? My vet told me it was kinda dangerous to have both cats and rabbits but you manage? Did you have the rabbits first?
pantswarrior: Three bunnies snuggling adorably. (3sisters)

Oh no worries - my teacher at my old art school was also a rabbit person, and we had four-hour classes sometimes on Saturdays... and we would spend the entire time working and talking about our rabbits and then I'd stay after class to keep talking about them, hahah. He's no longer an art teacher and I'm in my 30s, but we still keep in touch and talk about rabbits (among other things we turned out to have in common).

And yeah, I really only change the litterboxes once a week and they're not stinky even then. Cat boxes, if I leave them for more than a day, they reek - my girlfriend used to leave them for a week and I was just DYING from the stench. :P When I heard someone say rabbits stink, I was like "wtf, what kind of pets have YOU had?" But ohhh boy are you dead on about the shedding. I have taken pics of my buns next to a pile of their own fur as big as they are. XD

I've got four at the moment, which is kind of hilarious, because my first bun was an only bun. Then after he died, I adopted two brothers. Then I thought to get another pair after they were gone, and wound up with three sisters. They were already pretty old and special needs pets, because they'd been so horribly abused when they were babies, so I didn't have long with them... And since then, gradually I and people I know have happened to come across rabbits that need homes, so now I have four. This is a slightly disturbing trend...

Bear and Jasmine are a bonded pair, and they get to run free in my room (except when Bear is feeling naughty - he climbs from my bed onto the shelves and throws things off, presumably just because he can - at which point I have to confine them till he calms down). Pepper is a little firecracker, and can't roam free unattended except in very well bunnyproofed areas, so she lives in a large cage made of those cube storage unit things, and I let her run in the currently vacant bedroom - with the door closed, because she recently figured out she can jump the baby gates. Dusty is an escape artist as well as a big nibbler, so he can't be left to run unattended at all, and he stays in the HUGE cage I built for the three sisters (since he is about as big as all three of them put together). I let him run around the living room though, since I spend most of my time there these days and can keep an eye on him.

And I was worried about cats and rabbits too, but I had a rabbit and my friend had cats when we were going to move in together, so we tried to introduce them... and the cat was terrified of the rabbit. Who was the sweetest little thing, he reminded me of a perpetually awkward and clumsy puppy - but when one cat tried to drink his water, he wound up chasing the cat out of the room with teeth bared. It was HILARIOUS. And then my girlfriend moved out here and she's a cat person, and that same rabbit became best friends with one of the two cats we adopted. Since then, we've adopted a few more of each, and mostly everyone gets along, except for the couple of cats who are scared to death of the rabbits. XD

I'm another person who was dismissive about rabbits - until I came home and was presented (with an unwanted rabbit dumped on my dad) and she was so friendly I fell in love.
