I found Joffrey a pretty sad character in general. He was so awful and so messed up, and nobody could do anything about it because he'd have them killed. But he was just a kid, you know? Not that it excuses his actions at all or makes them any less terrible, but he was a kid. A profoundly disturbed kid. I always wondered if he would've been the way he was if he had had some measure of discipline.

Agreed, completely.

I thought he was crazy because he was also born of incest. Look at Dany. But yes, I agree that discipline would help him maybe not be crazy.

...That's not how incest works.

And dragons don't exist either.

please tell us how incest works, incestxpert

I'd agree, except all canonical evidence points to Tommen and Myrcella being perfectly sane, so to speak, so his insanity can't really be explained as a product of incest without the other children having the same insanity.

(Genetic disposition on Cersei's behalf, perhaps, but that would have been the case if he was Robert's or Jaime's so it's irrelevant.)

Same, same. There's no telling how or when he got so screwed up (whether he was born predisposed to it or not), but it is really obvious that he was failed, utterly, by every person in any kind of authority around him, well before we ever see him in the books or show. He isn't nice, or likeable, or good, but he is really, really tragic to me. :(
