I didn't. Cause he was the same with Sansa at the beginning.

Nope. He never anything to redeem himself and was a complete asshole to the bitter end. I never felt sorry for him.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OP didn't say redeem though, she said humanize. Big difference.

For me it were the situations in which people/circumstances showed that he knew that he was a useless little asshole.

Personally I only got truly human vibes from him in the last few seconds. The look of a scared little boy. I felt maybe a teeny tiny bit sorry for him then.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, the little bastard was a psychopath. That episode came out the day before my birthday, and it was an awesome present. Like someone else said, he was the same with Sansa at first, but Margaery was better at playing into his fantasies, whereas Sansa is more like her father, and doesn't play games well.

I'm not a huge fan of this show, but I tend to over-empathize with characters. I saw enough of GoT to have moments where I did pity Joffrey (sp?). He was a little shit, etc, but he had a couple "scared kid" moments and that's enough to make me have no desire for them to die.

I found Joffrey a pretty sad character in general. He was so awful and so messed up, and nobody could do anything about it because he'd have them killed. But he was just a kid, you know? Not that it excuses his actions at all or makes them any less terrible, but he was a kid. A profoundly disturbed kid. I always wondered if he would've been the way he was if he had had some measure of discipline.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, completely.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I thought he was crazy because he was also born of incest. Look at Dany. But yes, I agree that discipline would help him maybe not be crazy.

Same, same. There's no telling how or when he got so screwed up (whether he was born predisposed to it or not), but it is really obvious that he was failed, utterly, by every person in any kind of authority around him, well before we ever see him in the books or show. He isn't nice, or likeable, or good, but he is really, really tragic to me. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sad that people are happy over a 13 year old dying in his mother's arms

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. In a situation where said kid is a selfish, crazy, sadistic murderer who will undoubtedly continue to worsen as his power grows, it's understandable that people should rejoice that his reign of terror is ended - and that he received justice for his willfully evil acts. (Also, in the show he's closer to 17.)

Pretty sure I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but... I kinda liked show!Joffrey because of the actor playing him. Like, I enjoyed the hell out of his performance. I still cheered every time he got slapped around or sent to bed without supper, but to me show!Joff was a lot more tolerable than book!Joffrey.

Also, I was kinda sad that they killed him off so early into the season. (But on the other hand... go, Jack Gleeson! Be freeeee!)

Man I just have so many mixed-up feelings about Joffrey and his death...cause I feel like I understand why he turned out the way he did? Like I think with him killing kittens as a child it was a classic sign that something was wrong with him, and that coupled with him being the eldest child of the king (more pressure) + whatever sort of stress Cersei might have transferred knowing that he wasn't really the king's child + having Robert the aggressive abusive drunkard as a father figure, it's all just a bad mix. But I mean this doesn't excuse his actions at all, and I think he was at the sort of age (in the books at least) where he's still a kid but at the same time needs to start taking responsibility. So he was a terrible person, with reason, but still a terrible person, but I can't really cheer over his death. Especially with his mother there watching her eldest son die, idk I get really emotional about mother/child narratives even if they're terrible people, I just feel weird about it when people are just acting like it's the best yahoo he's dead!! Especially seeing it on the show made me a little nauseous, it was pretty gruesome imo and seeing someone struggle to breath like that always freaks me out :/ Sorry for the novel apparently I have a lot of thoughts about this.

Same. Also I liked his scene where his mom was bandaging his arm in Season 1. He was insisting that he didn't fight off the wolf, he just lied down and screamed, and then Cercei insisted that when he becomes king truth will be what he decides to be.

So he will never seem weak again. No wonder he rolled with it.

Yeah, I think the show did a good job of making even some of the most horrible characters in the series seem a bit more human without glossing over the fact that they're still, well, horrible.

I did actually feel a bit sorry for Joffrey sometimes because the kid never had a chance not to be a complete psycho. I mean, clearly he didn't care but idk, it was still a bit sad somehow. He just had a really pathetic life and a pathetic death. :/

I feel bad for him because he could have become a better person with Margaery's influence instead of Cersei's.

I must admit, I read the books late and haven't watched the TV series, but I never 'got' the deep, intense hatred of Joffrey. Of course, he's a horrible character, but there's a book full of 'em. He's thirteen. He's got a psychopath mother and a father-who's-not-really-his-father who can barely tolerate him. His whole family is messed up. He never stood a chance. He's just a kid. That doesn't excuse anything he did- thirteen's old enough, especially in this world- but compared to fully-grown adults who should know better, I don't get why he is the most-hated character.

Obviously I get why people hate him, but I don't get why they hate him more than Cersei or frigging Ramsay Snow! I'd say it's down to what I've heard is a fantastic performance by Jack Gleeson, but a lot of book readers truly hate him too.

Me too, anon, me too. Although I never thought he would be "cured" of his messed up mentality he was definitely enlightened of different PR (lol). If only for the short moment but still.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know that this scene or his interactions with Margaery really humanized him more, to me (could never tell where he might have been learning something vs. delighted on a very surface level by a new experience and possible chance to manipulate people) but I definitely find his death very bitter. I'm happy that his reign is over. I'm happy he can't terrorize anyone any more. But his whole life was deeply tragic to me. Every single adult in his life failed him (Robert through abuse, Cersei through enabling him, Jaime through never caring, Tywin both indirectly through emotional abuse of his children and more directly through negligence toward him until it was too late, and Tyrion through negligence, too much frustration/little patience and being ineffectual and disrespected anyway).

I don't want to woobify him. It doesn't excuse ANY of his behavior. But it is humanizing, and it's sad. Watching him die terrified instead of get better brought me zero satisfaction. I don't think it's really supposed to, either, though obviously ymmv.
