Though I have had personal acquaintances claim that it works, isn't acupuncture like... folk medicine without any scientific basis?

Not that it won't do anything, but there's a chance there's a placebo effect.

I didn't think it would do anything when I started, and it turned out immensely helpful. So it's not the placebo effect.

Not necessarily. There is still no evidence it works and you being skeptical doesn't make you immune to placebo effect.

My understanding is that in testing, it has performed better than placebo, but so have acupuncture needles stuck in non-traditional places. So it works, the mechanism is unknown, but it's definitely not the traditionally-believed mechanism.

It seems that there is some suggestion that insertion of needles/bleeding can release endorphins, same as cutting yourself or something. Thus, maybe "feels better" for a short time, but not for any medical reason and certainly not because of needles or anything else involved in acupuncture specifically.
