Acupuncture

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So I bought this deal from Living Social to get three acupuncture sessions. My first one is tomorrow. The only thing I can think of to use this for is relieving stress (and maybe control stress eating).

Has anyone done acupuncture for stress? Or maybe something else? Did it help you, work for you? I had a friend that did it for migraines and it really helped her. She hates needles but she could do this fine.

It's really helpful.

I hope you enjoy it and get some use out of it - I myself think it's a crock of shit

+1
And do believe me when I say that I know what I'm talking about :(

If it's done right it“s effective for all sorts of problems. Usually it's done five-eight times... Maybe take some music with you or it could get boring.

Though I have had personal acquaintances claim that it works, isn't acupuncture like... folk medicine without any scientific basis?

Not that it won't do anything, but there's a chance there's a placebo effect.

Re: Acupuncture

I didn't think it would do anything when I started, and it turned out immensely helpful. So it's not the placebo effect.

Re: Acupuncture

Not necessarily. There is still no evidence it works and you being skeptical doesn't make you immune to placebo effect.

My understanding is that in testing, it has performed better than placebo, but so have acupuncture needles stuck in non-traditional places. So it works, the mechanism is unknown, but it's definitely not the traditionally-believed mechanism.

It seems that there is some suggestion that insertion of needles/bleeding can release endorphins, same as cutting yourself or something. Thus, maybe "feels better" for a short time, but not for any medical reason and certainly not because of needles or anything else involved in acupuncture specifically.

The only thing I can say is that acupuncture is not a reasonable substitute for scientifically backed medicine. It's worth reading up on the history of the practice of acupuncture and what skeptics say about it if you have any concerns.

Ultimately I doubt it'll do any harm, and if you're into spiritual healing I'm sure it'll have an effect on you! Just don't go throwing away any prescription medicine or the like.

A 2010 study from the New England Journal of medicine indicates that acupuncture works about as well as placebos do, so... well, if it's possible to get your money back, I would. Light exercise is a relatively cheap and easy way to combat stress.

On the other hand, a 2012 meta-analysis found that 50% of patients receiving acupuncture experienced improvement in pain, compared to 30% who didn't get acupuncture and 42.5% who received "sham acupuncture".

Seing people seriously say that acupuncture doesn't work is so weird, for me.

It's like hearing somebody saying that warm soup isn't good for a cold or something.

Acupuncture remains a myth. You might as well go get someone to realign your chakras or something, or other magic.
