What I hate about the Wicked phenomenon most is how much the Wicked Witch of the West is glamorized in favor of completely depowering Dorothy. Ozma too, not that most people know about her. Can no one recall that Dorothy is a fucking badass?

I would love a straight revival of the Oz stories for exactly that reason.

There are four Oz themed shows coming out this year/next year. One has Dorothy as a villain, and one Dorothy is a doctor. I can't remember what the other two are, but yeah.

where is she a villain?

THANK YOU. I even hate the movie version of The Wizard of Oz for watering her down the way it did.

Same. I also hate it for a far stupider reason, which is forever cementing Dorothy into the American mindset and being a brunette with pigtails. SHE'S GOT AN AWESOME BLONDE BOB.

I'm laughing at this comment because when I was a kid I was Dorothy for Halloween and I didn't get a wig or anything so a bunch of people kept telling me that Dorothy doesn't have red hair.

Even though the movie didn't get it right, I was still wrong ;_;

The original illustrator, W. W. Denslow, had her with two brunette ponytails/braids. Starting with the third book (the second Dorothy book, Ozma of Oz, whence Dorothy returns to Oz and the surrounding lands), the new illustrator, John R. Neill, depicted her with the blonde bob. A VAST improvement, I adored Neill's illustrations even as a little kid, they are marvelously detailed.

I just want a good movie about Ozma, seriously. Ozma was so freaking badass, and The Marvelous Land of Oz is a hilarious book.

I mean what kills me about all this is that the original books, written a hundred years ago, are more feminist than any of the modern adaptations. Way to go, society.

Big Dog Ink can? Sorry, nothing to add about the movies, just plugging their Oz-as-a-western comics because so far they're really entertaining and I love their Dorothy.

This. If you want a re-imagining of Oz with a badass Dorothy, go read Legend of Oz: The Wicked West. It's basically my favorite comic ever. It stars Dorothy as an adult woman, and specifically as your archetypical lone gunslinger hero of most westerns. It's awesome.

(Also I don't think you can really say Wicked did anything to Dorothy's character. She's. Not even in it, really. Like she exists but her character isn't the point so she isn't much of a thing. And I really don't feel like Wicked disrespects the source material, either, idk where that complaint came from)
