There is a difference between giving them dimensions/interesting backstories and turning the heroes into villains in order to do that. And this movie seems to be setting up the humans as villains and making Malificent into a good/relatively good person.

Which, no. I don't care how awesome the dragon looked. I'm all for deep villains, but not woobified ones.

I don't know that the movie does that. I'm reserving any kind of judgment until I see it.

I will bet you an internet cookie that she's the misunderstood underdog who's idyllic and strange but free life was destroyed by MAN and now she's taking her revenge. It looks pretty obvious in the trailer, unless they're pulling some serious mindgames.

Exactly! I find fleshing out backstory and villains and stuff to be cool, but the problem is that this is never done within canon. You could make the villain sympathetic and interesting without butchering the canon protagonists - or at least you should. But this is out and out woobification, which is btw what happened in Wicked. Tons of really bizarre non-canonical stuff just to make Elphaba a misunderstood woobie.

From what I could tell, it more made the other fairies into dicks and humans an innocent third party caught in the middle.

OT

But I'm suddenly imagining the Han Solo in your icon leaning against the TARDIS.

That would be an awesome crossover.

Indeed it would be. Indeed it would be.

lol what trailer have you seen because absolutely none of them imply what you're reading into
