I see 'I just want a villain without a tragic backstory' a lot and am always a bit confused because people don't become evil for no reason. It can work sometimes, if the character is like...the Joker, in TDK for example - he was really more of an agent of chaos than an actual human being. But it's hard to do.

I'm just going to Godwin this and say that Hitler's past wasn't exactly tragic.

There was still a reason, even if it wasn't tragic. Everything has a reason of some sort. In my experience it usually tends to be something bad that causes another bad thing.

Yeah but, he did sort of have a tragic backstory. He had his emo moments with art, soul crushing experiences during World War 1 etc. All depends on perspective. Either way, a 'tragic backstory' doesn't make an awful person any less reprehensible.
