Or you know, just maybe OP's co-worker is an admirer of Malala Yousafzai.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but the fact that people TRIED TO KILL HER because she was saying that girls in her country should be allowed to learn to read, which the majority of them were and are not, kinda says something about that culture. Pakistan is HELLA misogynistic, there's literally no way anyone can argue about that.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't judge them, it's a different culture from ours.

Quick question: Didn't IP logging get turned off recently? Did I miss an announcement that it was turned back on? (Should note, I'm totally in favor of IP logging that the mod/s can see, just because of trolls like this, but I remembered the "Sure, we'll try without logging for awhile" but not that it got turned back on. *confused*)

Aha! Thank you. Is it going to remain on, or is it just for now? *curious minds and all*

A+

It says something about the culture, not every person in it. Case in point, Malala and her supporters.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Cultures are made by and of people yo. And Malala and her supporters are most definitely NOT the majority.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
No, but they are still individuals who were brought up in that culture.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and? There have been dissenters in EVERY CULTURE EVER. That doesn't mean that the majority is made of dissenters. It's great that M. and her crew are trying to change things, and I hope they succeed, but the fact that they exist does not invalidate the fact that that culture NEEDS to change, and change a LOT, if women are going to have anything approaching equal rights. And that is because the individuals that comprise that culture are mostly not all that invested in the idea of women being given rights. That is why Malala and her supporters are such a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, okay, Pakistani culture is sexist and needs to change. I don't think anyone is arguing against that. However, Malala and her supporters being Pakistanis raised in Pakistani culture doesn't keep them from empowering women. Ergo, it doesn't have to be a choice between "Pakistani" and "even approaching empowering for women."

Oh, absolutely.

I just feel the need to rebel against any statement that seems to assert that EVERY Pakistani is misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not "people from her country", the Taliban. Your argument is like saying people who died in 9/11 were attacked by Al Qaeda therefore American society is Al Qaeda.

Pakistan is hella misogynistic, but that's not the same issue as the Taliban closing down schools (which are funded and administered by...the Pakistani Government).

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Regardless of the culture as a whole, that doesn't change the fact that Malala is both Pakistani and empowering to women. So there is an option to pick both. Even if it's only one option.

OP

And there's a Pakistani cartoon called Burka Avenger where the heroine fights for the right to teach young girls, so there people on both sides of that debate.

While wearing a burka.

Only in superhero mode... she doesn't even wear a hijab in her civilian identity (not that there's anything wrong with Hijabs)... A lot of people in Pakistan from what I've read were concerned with the fact that she wore a Burka... but it's her disguise so that the bad guys don't know who she is.
