Yep, they are pretty terrible.

Sometimes, I want to read something with a happy ending. Something to cheer me up. I would love to be able to pick up a romance novel or a film, and just have a sweet love story, without any of the bizarre tropes that come along with it. Truly, is that too much to ask?

But, optimist that I am, I'm still hesitant to label an entire genre of ANYTHING as being all bad. There are probably one or two good films or books that exist, somewhere out there.

I have just never found one I enjoyed so far.

Thank you, omg. This is basically how I feel. I can't say that literally all romance movies are bad ever because I really like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," but almost all the other ones I've seen have made me mad in some way.

If you're gonna like one, I think MBFGW is a pretty good one to like.

AYRT:

I like that movie too! We must have similar taste. :)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is, I think, way more about the main character's character development and her family, and the romance is kind of icing. You might like Saving Face with Joan Chen, OP. It's demi-romance (there are two in the movie) but it doesn't conform to tired gender roles and stereotypes and it's really more about the relationship between the mother and the daughter rather than the relationship between the daughter and her girlfriend or the relationship between the mother and the mother's romantic option.

Just to clarify, I'm not trying to do that thing where somebody tells you they don't like Breaking Bad and you say, "Well, you haven't seen Cat's In the Bag!" I just thought you might like it given the other thing you like. I always worry I come off as pushy in comments. :)

That, that, that! I usually just tell people I think romance is boring, so they don't recommend it/try to make me watch romcoms with them, but they truth is sometimes (depending on my mood) I probably would like reading or watching romance stuff. I just don't find the gender roles and cliches appealing at all (which does make most of the genre boring to me, so I'm not really lying when I tell people that).

And this is basically why I read fanfiction.

Because everything has labels and ratings and it's easy to find exactly what I want, and avoid the shitty sexist tropes. It serves my need for romantic feel-good fluff.
