TV series, especially sitcoms, shouldn't last for more than three or four seasons at the most, period. This is a huge pet-issue of mine. The era of Seinfeld and Frasier is over.

The entire concept of "jumping the shark" comes from shows that lasted longer than they should have. Quantity is the enemy of quality.

I also *really* believe people should get more creative with formats in general: more mini-series, more shows that have maybe a grand total of ten or twenty one-hour episodes instead of a hundred or more episodes at barely 20 minutes. Or, you could have a trilogy of movie-length episodes, on TV, and this could be a new thing. Take some risks and get experimental with the format.
This is what would revitalize TV and make me want to watch more. But, is that going to happen? Apparently not, because I'm guessing it's more profitable to have some show drag on for eight, ten, or twelve years.
