... You realize that the whole point in demonstrating the goodness of his character is that he was tempted appease the capricious, evil ruler of his kingdom and then didn't even though he was aware of the harsh penalties for disobedience?

Yes, but when you wander in all innocence into a stranger's home, while it's comforting to know that he wouldn't actually go through with it, it's still not the safest or most pleasant thing to realise that he was considering selling you to a warlord you didn't even know existed.

In terms of feeling safe in the company of strangers, the idea that selling you to a witch was even an option isn't the most reassuring, you know?

It demonstrates the goodness of his character, but not the safety of wandering into random strangers' homes for tea.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
He still almost did it. That alone says they picked the wrong person. He brought Lucy to his home with motives other than just a pleasant talk and tea in mind.

OP basically picked a bad example is all, and I'm wondering if they REALIZE that.

I dunno. How brave would you expect basically good, decent people to be when they're not particularly strong or able to defend themselves AND they're ruled by a cruel tyrant who kills people at the drop of a hat? It's easy to say that people who comply (initially) are bad people, but the truth is they're not. They're everyone: you, me, your friends, most people you know, etc. MOST people would comply out of fear for their own lives and their families' lives because you're weighing the cost of your loved ones against the life of a total stranger.

Now this is not to say that there aren't heroes. Some people really do measure up to the heroic ideal, they go above and beyond expectations and take on huge risks to help others and act bravely even when it costs them their lives. But those people are heroes because their behavior is rare, and because the majority of us can't/won't/don't do what they do.

I don't think anyone is saying that Tumnus wasn't incredibly brave and decent for doing what he did. It's just that the secret is talking about finding someone it's safe to go on snowy walks with without having to worry that they might have designs on your safety, and the fact is that a man who has to seriously consider selling you to a tyrant to keep himself alive is, ordinarily speaking, not that person. Ideally, there should not be a point in your conversation with a random stranger where they have to admit that they were planning to hand you over to an evil authority but on reflection they are not, now, going to do that. That is not a thing that should come up in conversation if what we're looking for is a nice safe wander with a nice, safe person.

That might be true if Tumnus were only "a man who has to seriously consider selling you to a tyrant to keep himself alive", but the sum of his character is "a man who has to seriously consider selling you to a tyrant to keep himself alive but ultimately doesn't because he knows it's wrong".

That kind of person is fine to go with, because being tempted to do something bad doesn't make you a bad person, it makes you human. Being tempted and making the right decision is what makes you a good person.

Perhaps what we should take from this is that one cannot trust anyone when living under a tyrannical government -- which I think has been argued before.

He. Still. Had. Ulterior. Motives. When. Walking. With. Her.

The very thing the OP wishes she wouldn't have to worry about.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP picked a bad example at all. Tumnus is an imperfect character, but a good one.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
When you say you want to just walk safely with a stranger and be invited to tea and not have to worry about being harmed, no, no he's not.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
But he is? He didn't turn her over. I guess she in some theoretical sense should have been worried, but he turned out to be a good and loyal...creature.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-24 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
He still fucking considered it. There were ulterior motives to the tea. He didn't invite her because he was a nice goddamn guy. Was he nice enough not to turn her over in the end? Sure.

But if you want to make a secret about wanting to walk with someone without ulterior motives, then Tumnus is NOT the person to use for it.
