Dang, I'll have to check that out.

Manga smelling like manga is also important me.

Book scents are great.

I don't think that's weird, though I do wonder if there is actually a reason it smells different or if it's just your perspective.

Most likely companies shift paper distributors often enough hoping to get the best deal. It's a tricky business finding the best for the least money -- a cheap deal sometimes means that the ink will rub off on the readers fingers and bleed through the pages (boy I remember those days). A better-quality paper may be heavier and cost the company more on shipping.

That makes sense. Though of course there are many companies that might then not end up all smelling the same at the same time...

No, I feel you. I haven't noticed a change specifically, but I love the manga smell. I love book smells in general. c:

I love new book smell. I even like some old book smells, as long as they aren't too musty.

Raise your hand if you just went to sniff your manga.

*hand is up*

As far as I can tell it retains some of the old smell, but there's some kind of new smell on top of it?

This made me realize how long it's been since I've read manga.

It also made me want a new car, just for the smell.

This made me realize how long it's been since I've read manga.

Me too, then I felt a bit sad. I used to love the smell of manga. (Which feels like a weird thing to say, but whatever, apparently others agree. Books DO smell good.)

It's honestly been so long that I can't remember that it (D:), but! New books in general definitely have a very distinct smell, and it's both nice and oddly calming. It seems to permeate bookstores; I think that's part of why I love them so much.

IA, and as silly as it sounds that's one reason I still prefer to own an actual book rather than a digital copy. Digital books are so convenient, but I love the smell and feel of books.

Eh, that doesn't sound silly to me at all. I've also had trouble getting into eBooks, and it's because I'm all about the tactile sensation. I like opening a book, touching its cover, running my finger along its pages. I like the sound that accompanies turning a page. I like the way a book "shrinks" as you near its end.

I feel like reading isn't only about reading; it's about an atmosphere that eBooks just can't capture.

That's part of the appeal for me as well. No matter how much I like a book, if I try to read it in eBook form it takes forever. I think I miss the actual paper. I also get distracted because...well, internet, and I don't typically do that when I have a book in my hand.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
apparently there's a perfume that's applied to make new cars smell new(er) or with certain attributes. maybe you can look into that
otakugal15: (eh?)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-04-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference? They just smelled like...ink and paper to me.

Huh. I don't even remember. i just remember the books feeling more sturdier, but they were shit to open without them falling apart. :C

down with all book smells. god bless my kindle so i don't have to sniff anything lol.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, I play a game with books, where I'll try to nail down the year of publication within a year either side. Some of it's cover design, font choice, like that, but one of the tests is opening it up and sniffing. Different eras have different smells.

Go ahead, try it now with a couple books of different ages.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
oh my god I thought I was the only one who did this!

book nerds are awesome

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think so, too. I bought a manga the other day and the ink/pages smelled bad.

Are you me?

My very favorite smell in the entire world is the way the old-timey '90s flipped Viz manga smelled. Because I'm an idiot I used to smoke cigarettes indoors and now my substantial collection just smells like crap. Sometimes I go to used book shops for the express purpose of finding old-timey Viz books and seeing if they still have the smell.

I'm pretty sure I have creeped out many a bookstore employee. Sorry, bookstore employees. :(
