I have to be honest, I have no idea why this movie is so popular? I mean, compared to other disney movies, and as a movie on its own.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's the first Disney movie that's explicitly stating that familial love is true love, too, and it doesn't have to be between someone and their SO. And that's a pretty big fucking deal.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
... Lilo and Stitch?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
mte, like, did the whole "ohana means family. family means no one gets left behind or forgotten" message just get, well, forgotten by people?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think I found Lilo and Nani's sibling dynamics to be way more interesting than Elsa and Anna.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's not explicit "familial love is true love," though, as much as people want to fucking make it out to be. Pet peeve with Disney fandom: nowhere does the movie even begin to delve into familial love vs. romantic love and which one may be more important.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
More important to some people, maybe. Personally I'd take my SO over my sister any day.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the thing. There aren't many kid's movies out there that explicitly say that, hey, familial love can be just as important. It's always about True Love Is Romance, especially for little girls.

It's surprisingly enjoyable
New princesses
It is the most best selling Disney movie with a female lead
Romance took a giant backburn
It's in the new 'style'
It was pretty
Kids have gone nuts over it <- the main reason, regardless of tumblr's excitement over it I doubt they're the ones who bought out all the stock in stores.

Your mileage is of course, going to vary, especially as you get older? When I was young I ate up all the disney movies. I had faves, but I loved them all. Now as I'm older and my experiences have increased I'm a bit pickier. I thought Tangled was so damn boring as fuck, I realise I don't actually /like/ the Lion King, some of my Disney faves have moved from OMGBESTEVER into the "yeah that was nice to watch" with Frozen.

Point is, it is popular and things will get popular because they meet some kind of large Yes checkbox - irrespective of if you think it doesn't meet your personal level of 'popular worthy'

Makes sense, nice answer. :)

I think probably I'm biased because I'm not into the 'new style' and yes, I'm older now, so disney movies are rarely unpredictable to me in their execution and concepts...

Sorry I probably sounded a bit harsh, throw some :) in there, curse you internet text 'tones'.

I can't judge you, I really really disliked Tangled and did not understand what tumblr found so appealing about it. Same with Rise of the Guardians and a few others.
But just because something is really big on tumblr does not reflect how it's doing with the target audience and why? Tumblr likes it for all the Letting it Go type deals, while kids seem to be all about the princess-sisters and clothes and pretty snow <- which is the driving force behind it doing so well. Cause lets be honest, most of tumblr probably pirated ;)

Thankfully little sister and my interests seem to align pretty well XD

It's actually the most successful animated film ever now, it's phenomenally successful and you are right, it's because of the way kids loved it and wanted to see it over and over.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's Broadway show set to animation. It doesn't feel like a Disney animated movie like the way Mulan or Tangled does. For example, the scene where Olaf first appears (alive) and he literally walks into scene with the trees almost framing everything like a stage, you can see that absolutely translate as is on a live stage. And the way he goes into song, it doesn't feel like a Disney song but a Broadway musical song.

Frozen is a Broadway musical for people who can't get to Broadway.

Alright... if I think about it that way, I might have to give it a rewatch and just think 'Broadway' the entire time. Might actually enjoy it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think it's pretty good, but I don't get the people saying it's the next Beauty and the Beast or Little Mermaid. I'd say it's somewhere on par with The Jungle Book for me. Enjoyable, but not something I'm going to go out of my way to watch.
