I don't think so, but I like your optimism.

I thought part of the reason it was popular was a combination of a story focusing on a sister-sister relationship, messages that love at first sight is dumb, and a main character (especially a lady) who could easily be interpreted as queer.

(Dang, I still have to see this movie. Yikes.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, people jump for allegories and allusions. I wonder if they'd be just as excited about actual queer people.

Not just queer. A mental illness allegory is possible too which pulls in another demographic. I still relate more to Anna than Elsa though.

This that were "meh" about Frozen:
-Haven't we seen the "manage your powers by denying them and keeping them under wraps and isolating yourself" misperception done way too many times? We were eight minutes into the movie and moaning, "Charles Xavier, where are you when we need you."
-Hans didn't show one iota of his hand until the Big Reveal, and then he was all EEEEVIL. We couldn't have had him simply trying to make an advantageous marriage by sucking up to royalty without being all MURRRDERRRR about it?
-A few lyrics are pretty cliche, half the songs are kinda mediocre.

Things that were so good about Frozen they make me forgive the other things:
-Story about SISTERLY LOVE BEING MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN ROMANTIC LOVE. Wow. I'm able to stop my list right there.

Eh, I dunno.

The main reason I like this movie is this: I'm trying for a kid right now. And, see, Disney makes things really easily digestible for kids. So I see this movie, and I think, "holy fuck, this is a great way to start a conversation with my future progeny about personal autonomy and the difference between infatuation and love."

I don't like it anywhere near as much as a lot of other Disney movies, and I can see how it's mediocre in comparison, but I still think it has its merits.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the climax is actually what pushes it into greatness. I love that quote going around tumblr about how the scene was pitched and the entire room of animators were left gaping, Lassiter said he'd never seen anything like that, and the person pitching it got a standing ovation.

IMO, even the soundtrack isn't particularly fantastic -- Alan Menken in his Disney Renaissance days would have wiped the floor with the Lopezes, although the score is stunning in parts.

I have to be honest, I have no idea why this movie is so popular? I mean, compared to other disney movies, and as a movie on its own.

Wait, people like this movie? I just saw it a few days ago (with no expectations and no idea what it was about) and thought it was incredibly bland. I'm glad Disney finally got wise to the love story part, but it really seemed to me like the only good song was "Let It Go" and the movie overall would have been 1000% better if it had actually about the character who had the more important character arc: Elsa. I'm not saying there wasn't a good idea in Anna's story, but I found the execution to be amazingly boring. It felt like a movie I'd watched before, without even having seen the trailer, and I called the "twist" from a parsec away. I'd figured fandom would have put it among the ranks of "man, they haven't made a good one since Pocahontas, CGI is ruining everything, they should really stop cribbing stuff from Wicked" recent Disney.

Huh, I guess not. Looking at the other comments: did you guys like the idea of it primarily, or do you actually think it's a good story? Personally, I knew I was supposed to be feeling something during the climax, but was ultimately unable to overcome my disappointment with the rest of the movie. Like I said, I like the idea of it in theory and it was a painfully long-overdue step forward for Disney, but I'm also probably never going to watch it again.

Aside from "Let It Go," the soundtrack is weak--the worst of any Disney movie.

It was very pretty and was Tangled-but-with-snow in writing and style. Having music that's almost as memorable as songs from Disney's renaissance was just a bonus aspect to its success, IMO. Some people were so dazzled that they completely forgot about every other Disney film that wasn't about "romantic love trumps all", it was kinda funny.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Great, now I've got "Summer" stuck in my head.

"IN SUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR!"

"I'm going to tell him."
"Don't you dare!"

"IN SSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. The way people were/are fawning over it I was really excited to see it. When I watched it I found the story lacking and it seemed like everything went by so quickly. I did however really enjoy the music and I loved that the "act of true love" was about the sisters. I watched Tangled again last week and I realized that though I liked the music from Frozen more I liked Tangled overall a lot more. The story was stronger and the jokes funnier. It seemed like Frozen needed to go through a few more rewrites.

Nah, a friend and I went to see it (she knew absolutely nothing about it) and she came out really enoying it. Imo, it had some good averted tropes, like true love not necesarily being romantic, and the focus on the sister's relationship. The side kick not getting so much screentime was a huge bonus. Of course, the movie is not without flaws, but it was rather enjoyable. And gotta agree, the final scene really nailed it for a lot of people.

Also adding that, Let it Go aside, the rest of the songs where rather forgetable.

I must say, the marketing team that was behind this movie deserves a raise.

I thought it was kind of okay. The stuff after the annoying "Let's make a snowman" song and before they met Elsa again was pretty entertaining. The main character and her guy sidekick were pretty funny. I liked that the "true love" in question was familial (I always wanted something like that to happen when I watched movies as a kid). I hated all the songs except for the Anna (?) and villain song - which was pretty funny. The second part of the movie really lost its way, in my opinion. Elsa felt pretty vacant, as a character. The ending was really blah. I guess I wouldn't mind watching it again but I'd probably bounce before it got boring around the middle.

I think it's mediocre even with the music. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it -- I did, and I'm glad I saw it. But the only part of the soundtrack that's worth it, for me, are the opening credits and the part where she's fixing the weather. I love traditional musics, and that piece is one of my favorites.

I'd have loved it without the music (although I did enjoy the music quite a lot). It reminded me a whole lot of my sister and I and our relationship. While we did spend a lot of time together growing up, I've got anxiety issues and have often been 'locked into' myself and hard to really connect to/reach-- and I had a very flat affect as a child, which meant I seemed kind of cold (no pun intended, it's just the best word, sorry!), and while she is really outgoing and friendly, she was cut off from other kids because of how sick she got when she was young and so she spent a lot of time without a lot of friends, without leaving the house, without getting to meet people and have fun and see and do all that she wanted. So for me, it hit home very hard. And I know a lot of people with anxiety/depression/ASD connected to Elsa, and I'm sure a lot of people who've lived with someone living with anxiety/depression/ASD connected to Anna.

I have seen a lot of fangirling over 'Let It Go', sure, but I've also seen a lot of people who connect to the characters themselves. Not everyone's relationship with their sister parallels it as neatly as mine. Some people's might match it even more. Some people might not even have a sister, but they recognize some part of themselves somewhere.
