This is the fic it's from

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-04-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a lot of people asking which fic it was from, and since I recognized it I did a little digging through my stuff -- and voilà, it's from a novel zine called Graven Images. The artist in question is Connie Faddis, who has a very distinctive style and has one plenty of great illustrations.

(Hope everyone who was curious sees this reply; I gonna head offline soon so I didn't have the time to individually reply to everyone.)

I'm reading the fanlore site for it and lolling at the quotes of the reviews and reactions. I love how unnervingly *similar* fans back then were to fans nowadays. :D WHAT'S THIS SHIT HUTCH ISN'T THAT NEUROTIC/YES HE IS SHUT YO MOUTH KNOW YOU NOTHING OF ART?

The reviews are fucking priceless. One of my faves: "Aumerle's acceptance that most of us have more than a sixth-grade education is a compliment to fandom, not an insult..."

The link, for the curious: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Graven_Images

The reviews are lulzy.

"Newest Nordic Martyr" is the BEST THING.

The gallery of illustrations by this Connie Faddis, who is not the same person as the writer of the fic, is amazing though. The dedication is so impressive, doubly so for a fic that isn't your own! *gets stuck in a wikipedia pothole*

Showing my age, but I remember Connie Faddis's art. I think the one S&H zine novella I had was illo'd by her. The story was fabulous, but so not what I was looking for, so I sold it on eBay back around 2004 (along with my Remington Steele zines and my duplicate Doctor Who zines).

What was the zine novella about?

I mean, I know 90% of S&H fanfics are about one or both partners getting put through the wringer while whoever's not bleeding at the moment suffers emotionally while trying to rescue him, but I mean more specifically...

It was based on Andre Norton's novel, Dragon Magic. The art was gorgeous, but the story focused on Hutch throughout, and I think Starsky only appeared for about a page in an approximately 100-page zine.

Whaaaaaaaaaat. That sounds so boring. I mean, not that Hutch is boring, just that neither Starsky nor Hutch really work as characters if they're alone for too long.

Now you know why I sold it on eBay.

How much do zines usually go for? Does it vary a lot?

I don't know. I haven't bought any in literally decades. I sold mine for about what I paid for them, setting the initial bids around $10 - $15. I miss zines, really, but I still have some zines from Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Man from U.N.C.L.E., and Robin of Sherwood.

Damnit, why is there not even a plot summary of the fanfic in question if it isn't online? I wanna know what everyone's so stirred up about!
