The wording the OP used sucked. A lot. It hand-waves away a lot of pain and lingering trauma for a hell of a lot of people. And in no way did I mean to imply the OP was obligated to "constantly provide support" when people shared their experiences.

I don't always, or all I'd do is provide support.

But a character like Gothel triggers a lot in a person (not me personally, I've been fortunate enough not to have someone like her in my life), it's how they view the narrative so of course their experience becomes part of the discussion they engage in. A certain amount of empathy for that isn't unreasonable.

So be a shoulder to cry on for random internet people? No one is saying that. Or, I'm not anyway. But the "cry moar" attitude towards people's real abuse? Not cool.

And honestly, how else can you view her character? Nearly everything she says to Rapunzel, everything she did to Rapunzel, screams abusive. So I'm genuinely curious about how a person might view the character otherwise.

God, I hope that all made sense.

The OP said the character is their favorite villain, though? So I think they do see her as abusive, being a villain that she is.

That's one way of putting it, but with an awful lot of fans, liking a villain means trying to justify or make excuses for everything they do, or arguing that they really weren't that bad and other characters are just as terrible if not worse, or writing fic that gives them a tragic backstory and makes everything they do somebody else's fault.
