It looks like kurara's already given the basics, but good on you for wanting to try out things! I'm an old LJ RPer that's fallen out of it and thinking of starting it up, so here are a few things that I'm considering which you can probably use:

- If you want to start casually and anonymous, memes / dressingrooms are the best place. [personal profile] zombiesocks has a list of loads of DW communities that cover tons of fandoms, and those are places where it's not hard to jump right in to things.

- Don't worry if no one replies to you! Take a quick gander over to a place like [community profile] sixwordstories or any of the replies to the memes on one of the meme comms like [community profile] bakerstreet and you'll see that a lot of people go untagged. It's a common thing, don't stress out or anything if it happens, it doesn't mean anything, trust me.

- Tag people! It's the best way to get into RPing. Browse around until you see something you like, scan comments (or posts!) until you see someone you like, then just comment away. On large/casual RP places you don't have to worry about asking permission, just get to it, it's fine.

- Small communities vs. Large communities: if memes and things aren't your things and you want to join a game and aren't sure if you should be involved in a large one or small one, here's the quick difference- in a large one things tend (not a rule, just in general) to move a bit more quickly, and there's always something going on. It might be easier to get lost in the crowd, though, and if you don't stay active you might find yourself dropping off peoples' radar. In small communities, the pace is usually slower and the interactions longer, but people might take breaks for longer periods, and the people behind the characters usually become more prominent than they would in larger or more anonymous places.

- Now that you want to get started, how do you do anything? Well, creating a journal's a good way to begin. That should be straightforward enough. For how to make your journal look nicer and code things up and work with tables, I'd point you to both the Layout, Icons, Etc. category on the community recs list (with a particular shoutout to [community profile] dreamcodes) and for more places to start, there are things I haven't yet mentioned in the Roleplay category.

- Wait, but icons! If you're looking for them, the best way is to... stalk other people who play the same characters you do, if it's for fandom icons. Seriously, it seems odd, but it helps- look in their profiles for icon credits and see what communities they got them from. Many icon makers usually make batches of icons at a time, especially if it's for PB purposes, so chances are you'll find more that way. For PBs, though, just googling 'PB icons' will get you a pretty good result. Something like PB Updates is also a fantastic place to start, since they've got all sorts of fantastic sorting tags.

I hope that might've helped you or anyone else interested in jumping into RP. If you've got more questions or there are things I haven't covered which aren't here, feel free to PM me! I might not reply immediately, but I will probably get to it and see what I can do.
