RPG Codex is focused on PC gamers and I have to tell you, as someone who primarily plays PC games myself? Fuck PC gamers. Talk about an entitled, unpleasable, borderline sociopathic bunch. Made worse by the fact that they tend to hit douchebag bingo with their views on women, gay people and non-whites.
Also, they think Planescape Torment is the height of gaming. They're not to be taken seriously.

Hrm. Not quite. The difference is that said misogynists are long-standing, logged in posters who have been there for years and have attracted followings (to some degree) of the like-minded. Imagine if, say, instead of hit-or-miss teen comedy Chard or Noodles showed up to rag on bitches in every thread about sexism or feminism, and Case did absolutely nothing about it, but rather punished most of the people who responded to them.
Because the rules at the Escapist are a big part of the problem. Even on Kotaku, with Kinja, if some shithead shows up to rant about how hateful women or feminists are, you can just dismiss their comments. On the Escapist posts can never be perma-deleted, only hidden, and only by a moderator, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to keep them from commenting on your posts and filling up your inbox. The worst they can receive is a warning or a suspension or (maybe) a ban, and only if their "forum health meter" is completely full (i.e. they've shitspammed like ten people before you already with no consequences).
Worse, the rules the mods follow are bizarre. You can't personally attack someone, but if you do it in erudite language without cursing and don't name and posters specifically you can say absolutely anything you'd like about how Jews were responsible for the holocaust or how women deserve to be raped or how black people are inherently inferior to white people and Asians. Absolutely anything. No consequences from the moderators. But if you responded heatedly to that comment, swear, or call them racist/sexist/a bigot - guess what, here's your warning/suspension! And there are a couple of long term wastes of humanity on that site who've absolutely mastered the line between getting a warning or not and have spotless "forum health meters" despite every. Single. Post. Amounting to hate speech in certain countries.
Luckily they're usually drowned out by the good these days but there was a while - especially on women's issues/sexism/feminism - where they turned every single thread on the subject into unreadable, nauseating bullshit. Seriously, they were starting to make Kotaku look good in comparison.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 02:19 am (UTC)(link)it's amazing some women even get into video game in the first place, and manage to stay there.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)I actually re-read what you typed, and perhaps I've just missed a load of threads there, but I have seen many threads talk about issues that are talked about here without too much MRA vibes, but like I said, I primarily go there for certain videos and only occasionally look at threads.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)Spoilers for Ground Zeroes
(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)Basically one of the females you rescued on this mission has a bomb in her planted by the villain, Big Boss and others get it out, she wakes up long enough to tell you there was a second bomb in her and she explodes. Either during the credits or after, but at least some time after the game ends, you unlock a audio log that is basically this female character getting raped by the villain. From what I can tell it's fairly long, like 5+ minutes in length.

Thing is, you can deal with dark themes, just like Spec Ops did. The realistic ramifications of war. But you have to treat those themes with the appropriate gravity, or the effort is just as wasted as if you'd gone the WAR = FUN BLOWING SHIT UP TIEM route. Spec Ops dealt with its subject matter well.
A game with a female sniper running around in a bikini top because the creator "thought it would make for good cosplay" is not taking the issues of sexualized violence against women during war time with the appropriate gravity. This is not an area where you can have your cake and eat it too. You don't get to titillate using sexual assault then go "but really, it's bad!" in the same way no one would take CoD seriously if it suddenly tried to make you feel terrible about all the collateral damage you're doing when you blow up the Eiffel Tower with rock music in the background.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)Mostly because 80% of the time it's almost always treated poorly, especially if its written by a dude.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 02:20 am (UTC)(link)Nowadays, I just avoid it as a general rule, because it's used as a cheap, tacky plot device, and rarely treated well.
But is Kojima?
He said he wanted to stop making these a while back. They keep pulling him back in. And he decided to have fun with it in his own way.
And it's not like he was ever very serious to begin with.
