Re: Advice and tips? (tw: depression, suicide)

For me, the most important thing is to get involved with something. Even if I feel like I'm doing nothing with my life or I'm a failure, I can change that on a personal level. I can study a foreign language, take up a new hobby. Even join a local club or something, or volunteer at the local animal shelter. For me, the worst thing is sitting at home feeling shit about myself (and that's also the easiest thing to do).

If you are actually feeling suicidal - I'm sure you realize, but I should stress just how important it is to get to a doctor ASAP. Even a normal doctor can help set you up with antidepressants or a psychologist.

This is what I do too. Anything that keeps me from feeling utterly useless helps.

Agreed. Just starting something, no matter how 'small' a step it seems, and keeping it up can raise your self esteem, remind you that you are capable of ding awesome things, and also give you a routine and something to look forward to everyday.

For me, getting into a regular exercise routine really helped. I did it purely for my mental health, because my anxiety and depression were getting out of hand - and my god, does it help, even if it's just ridding yourself of the day's nervous energy. Doing it for my mental health also meant it was easier to keep up with, because I wasn't stressed about counting calories and all of that and I didn't have a specific goal other than 'do exercise every other day'. The incidental improved fitness levels and weight loss were just bonuses.
