Advice and tips? (tw: depression, suicide)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
hey F!S

lately I've been going through another bout of depression (mainly because I don't know what I'm doing with my life and I feel like a failure, but I won't bore you with my sob story.)

for those of you who also have suicidal thoughts - how do you deal with them? what do you do to take your mind off it? at this point I've sort of staved them off out of sheer willpower, sort of like: "FUCK YOU i'm not going to walk intro traffic just to spite the world"

i'm not seeing a counsellor at the moment but if it gets really bad I might consider it. other than that... I don't know. adorably puppy videos?

For me, the most important thing is to get involved with something. Even if I feel like I'm doing nothing with my life or I'm a failure, I can change that on a personal level. I can study a foreign language, take up a new hobby. Even join a local club or something, or volunteer at the local animal shelter. For me, the worst thing is sitting at home feeling shit about myself (and that's also the easiest thing to do).

If you are actually feeling suicidal - I'm sure you realize, but I should stress just how important it is to get to a doctor ASAP. Even a normal doctor can help set you up with antidepressants or a psychologist.

This is what I do too. Anything that keeps me from feeling utterly useless helps.

Agreed. Just starting something, no matter how 'small' a step it seems, and keeping it up can raise your self esteem, remind you that you are capable of ding awesome things, and also give you a routine and something to look forward to everyday.

For me, getting into a regular exercise routine really helped. I did it purely for my mental health, because my anxiety and depression were getting out of hand - and my god, does it help, even if it's just ridding yourself of the day's nervous energy. Doing it for my mental health also meant it was easier to keep up with, because I wasn't stressed about counting calories and all of that and I didn't have a specific goal other than 'do exercise every other day'. The incidental improved fitness levels and weight loss were just bonuses.

I usually surround myself with things that make me happy. Childhood movies and TV shows, happy songs, clips of my favorite comedians. I pretty much just try to drown out the negative thoughts will happy things. (It's basically the mental equivalent of sticking my fingers in my ears and going "LALALALA", but it tends to work for a while.)

I found in high school that sports helped, too. I did martial arts, and I generally felt better after a round of beating up on our punching bag. It didn't always make the thoughts go away, but I was too tired to do anything about them.

Either way, I hope you feel better soon. ♥

I rarely deal with this now, but back when it was more common for me to have that issue, I would just throw myself into something distracting - like a book I enjoyed. The moment would pass.

If these thoughts are intrusive to the point where you can't distract yourself from them and they're interfering with your daily routine, then it's probably time to see a professional about it.

But... everyone gets depressed. Nearly everyone considers suicide at some point in their lives, if only from the standpoint of "what if". Sometimes the answer is medication, sometimes the answer is just learning to accept and be okay with the fact that you aren't perfect, life isn't predictable, and goals usually don't turn out exactly as planned. Sometimes it's easiest to find faith in something (karma, fate, god, whatever you like) that things are going to turn out okay.

If you're the kind of person who likes goal-directed solutions, picking up a new commitment (ex. volunteering) can really make you feel like you're contributing, and give you new avenues to consider for where you want to take your life next.
