really? Maybe I'm just thinking Final Fantasy games but the last 'white mage guy' I can think of was Cecil. And he was STILL more a fighter.

...

Then again I gave up on Final Fantasy after X and when I tried to get back into it for IIIX I hated every damn character and the lack of exploration.

There are two white mage guys in Fire Emblem: Awakening. There are also two white mage girls, though.

I've never played Fire Emblem since those are strategy games.

FFV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFXII and the FFXIII franchise all let any character use any type of magic (or even any type of skillset, in some cases). If a male character can't heal, it's because the player made that choice.

I'm replaying FFX right now (HD REMASTER, FUCK YEAH). I had Tidus start learning white magic right away. I taught Wakka how to be a thief first, but because of how the sphere grid is laid out he's going to end up being the first in my party to learn the highest-power white magics, even before Yuna can!

Okay, but that doesn't make them 'white mages'. Knowing a little bit of white magic doesn't make you a white mage. And I don't think you can really count the games where the player can pick the job class. Again having a fighter know cure doesn't make the fighter a white mage.

I think that's a good point, but I also think it means that 'white mage' as a CHARACTER is an obsolete concept, when the trend is towards letting any character take on any job.

See I dislike that. I like the job class to fit the character of the, well, character. Like it made sense that Zidane would be thief/fighter or Garnet/Dagger being a white mage/summoner or Vivi being a black mage. What they did was part of who they were. I want the gameplay and the storytelling to blend. I don't want to build a character as, say, a black mage but in cut scenes they have none of those abilities. If I build my character as black mage I expect the story to reflex that (a reason I like Dragon Age because it does try to reflex how you play in the story).
