I think part of the drama isn't so much that Japanese people need to find it racist but as westerners, the popular opinion was that the video was amazingly embarrassing and Avril, being almost 30, is expected to know better than to get her weeb on at that age. It's offensive because she's representing us and no one remembers their 14 year old weeaboo stage fondly. I doubt Japanese people are aware of how common that viewpoint is over here, and unfortunately people latched onto the word racist to legitimize those feelings of collective embarrassment.

I'm pretty sure it's less "she's a weeb" and more "she has a huge fanbase in Japan and nobody else cares about her anymore"

This. I moved to Japan several years ago and thought I misheard when my Japanese friends told me they loved Avril Lavigne (who was already way old news). She has a massive following in Japan - pretty sure that's the only place where she does. So if she wants to appeal to an audience that loves the whole "kawaii" act then she's doing the exact right thing. Who cares if Westerners were offended, they aren't the target anymore anyway.

I'm always surprised when I ask students for their favourite English language singers/bands and her name shows up.

I'm always surprised when I ask students for their favorite American singers/bands and her name shows up.

Every time. Every time. Beiber and 1D, too. It's why I find this Avril's so racist thing hysterical in general, because if people understood what it's like over here, I think this would be moot.
