Not racist, just bad taste in music.

To be honest, the whole debacle behind the video was ridiculous. It was basically a bunch of non-Japanese people telling the Japanese that they should be offended.

My favorite thing about that whole thing is that people in Japan are not bothered by it all. Just like in the US (when some pop band releases some weird video), the fans think is amazing but everyone else is like "This is silly."

Then there are the Americans. "THIS IS HORRIBLY RACIST!!!!!!" And when actual Japanese people bring up that "No, it isn't. It was made in Japan, with a Japanese director, a Japanese company, and for a JAPANESE audience." And (I have actually seen this) some American responds with, "You just don't understand why it is racist. Here let me explain...."

Because yeah. That isn't racist at all. Treating another country like a child because you got your panties in a bunch over a non-issue. And then telling said country that they are wrong and should totally be offended.

It's a terrible song and music video, but the shitstorm over both is ott. SJW's have gotten so batshit with what they define as racist that some consider eating food from a foreign country or learning another language "cultural appropriation".

It's not like Japan itself isn't horribly racist to some groups, anyway. They also seem to fetishize America the same way Americans fetishize Japan. From what I can tell, only white tumblrers seemed to get their undies in a twist over this song because they never bring attention to things that actually matter.

But I hadn't got around to actually watching the video until now.
Good lord, it is so fucking awful.
It was mostly offensive to my eyes and ears, but it did have a few elements that probably weren't the most respectful ways to show their culture (all of the women who are actually women look exactly the same and are just there as decorations) but it's not like OMG THIS IS THE MOST RACIST THING EVER.

She mostly just sounds like some fucking idiot weebawoo 12 year old (and she's a 30 fucking year old woman with a child)

There's a difference between the video and the song. The song's a bit catchy. I can sort of understand why you like it.

The music video was just sad. My main problem with the video was that the back up dancers literally could have been robots. But the video didn't hold my attention and just seemed kind of pointless.

Not a racist video, just very "Japanese pop." Seriously, Avril's video could've been one of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's videos, scene for scene. And countless other "quirky" pop videos are of a similar "weird kawaii" style. Anyone who says this is racist has not seen any Japanese pop videos.

I don't even get where the racism accusation comes from, tbh. Because... her back up dancers are all *gasp* wearing the same outfit? Seriously, that's the best I've heard.

Still a terrible song, granted. But very Japanese pop in video style.

I think part of the drama isn't so much that Japanese people need to find it racist but as westerners, the popular opinion was that the video was amazingly embarrassing and Avril, being almost 30, is expected to know better than to get her weeb on at that age. It's offensive because she's representing us and no one remembers their 14 year old weeaboo stage fondly. I doubt Japanese people are aware of how common that viewpoint is over here, and unfortunately people latched onto the word racist to legitimize those feelings of collective embarrassment.

I haven't seen a single Japanese person who thought it was offensive, and I actively looked for reactions. A lot of people liked it because it was cute/catchy, a lot didn't because it's not a great song, but I didn't see anyone who thought it was racist or appropriation who was actually Japanese. Plus, didn't she do it for her Japanese fanbase anyway? AFAIK they were pretty happy with it.

(Not just about this video specifically, but I've seen a lot of people get het up about stars objectifying/degrading their background dancers by... not giving them equal time in the spotlight? Like, do you know what background dancers do?)

The song is catchy and sexy and stupid, like I expect from Lavigne. The video is aping Stefanie's chorus of silent expressionless Asian women thing, which is mega-racist instead of just kind of appropriative like the song is.

Non-Japanese person living in Japan long-term (and fluent Japanese speaker) here.

Avril is so popular here-- which is kind of hysterical because every time she makes TV appearances here she is so incredibly awkward and, in my opinion, rude in many ways. (To her defense, her rudeness, as I perceive it, comes from lack of understanding about Japanese culture in general.)

Her Japanese "speaking" is CRINGE-WORTHY in this song. I am sure she doesn't realize how appalling she sounds. It gives me the biggest amount of second-hand embarrassment. Or maybe she does know and really just doesn't care as long as she gets paid.

And Japanese people eat that up because it fits perfectly into the stereotype that they have made for western people.

It is not offensive or racist towards Japanese people... the video was made by Japanese for Japanese.

I think it DOES help build the stereotype here that western people are unable to speak Japanese-- and help to reinforce Japanese stereotypes about westerners who live in Japan or are interested in Japan.

I guess I don't particularly care?

And am not offended? Stuff like this gets thrown in our faces all the time and over time and after a while you stop caring so much. (And in the scheme of things it is a really petty thing to be upset about, I think.)

I am just pissed because I know that from now on, every time I go to karaoke with my co-workers or friends of friends, this song is going to be added to the queue and I am going to be forced to sing it. And I really, really don't want to sing it because I think it is a rubbish song.
