To be honest, the whole debacle behind the video was ridiculous. It was basically a bunch of non-Japanese people telling the Japanese that they should be offended.

It's not a bad song because it's pop music instead of metal, it's bad because it's shitty pop music. Their music taste would not intrinsically be better if they were listening to metal

Is the song racist? No, it's really not.

Is this MV horrible? Yes. The song is kinda mediocre in my opinion, but the video is just horrible and it makes the whole thing horrible. Not racist, just bad.

I think it's rather hilarious that the backup dancers who, in most Western videos would be wearing basically a thong and bra, are *totally covered*, neck to toes, and are pretty much the least-sexy thing in the video.

It is...a very odd video. I think my daughter would have liked it when she was eight.

LOL, yes to the bad taste part. I caught a bit of an NPR segment where a guy was brought on to discuss the video, and his analysis was pretty much "People are saying it's racist, but it's actually just kind of stupid and not good music and only her fans will like it. J-pop has some really interesting weird stuff going on right now and most people don't give a shit about Avril." It amused me greatly.

It seems like an attempt to appeal to j-pop and k-pop fans (of which there are a ton even in the US), which strikes me as more hilarious and desperate than racist or malicious.
