My favorite fragrant flowers are sweet peas, night-scented stock, scented dianthus, alyssum, and heliotrope. I also like scented geraniums, tho the flowers usually aren't showy. You can still start the sweet peas from seed (Old Spice Mix is very fragrant) but the rest you should get as starts from a nursery. I've grown all of them in containers, tho the sweet peas will need a trellis or a teepee to climb.
