How does your garden grow, FS?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Any gardeners here? I'm trying to start an herb garden this year. So far I've got rosemary and chives, and I hope to plant some basil, sage, dill and thyme. Usually I don't have a whole lot of luck with growing things from seed but I bought some zinnia seeds because I hear they're easy to grow.

This sounds kind of lame, but winter was long and miserable and I'd really like a riot of color and nice-smelling things this summer.

I'm trying to grow cilantro in this little miraclegro seed pod I bought. It's been a bit more than a week, but no avail. In time...

I've had cilantro take up to two weeks to sprout, especially if you start it outside (I don't know where you started it, obv)

I put it in my windowsill by sunlight, but some days I do take it out to get some direct sun for a few hours. I worry about it drying out.

Cilantro has kind of a messy growth habit, so you might want to give it more room. Also, if you want a steady supply, you'll have to keep planting more seeds. Once hot weather hits, cilantro bolts very quickly and goes to seed.

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I think I may need a bigger pot.

Well, we grow some herbs and such usually. But the weather has been shit (it is cold again) so not sure how this summer is going to go. :C

we had a load of tulips this year, at least half a dozen kinds!
They're mostly gone now, but they were amazing. Our wisteria is also nicely doing this year.
I want to do something with all the pepperment that runs wild on the side, aside from tea, that is. Peppermint syrup? Or maybe even something practical for teeth?

We have an incredible surplus of mint every year. Last year, we made several glasses of hot mint jelly - it's basically a jam with chopped mint, apple juice/vinegar and chilli and it's super delicious on chicken or with couscous/tabulé and yoghurt. It's also a great gift.

I grow tomatoes and flowers at my house, along with some herbs, but I also have a garden at my mom's house, where we grow tomatoes, okra, bell peppers, cucumbers, and some herbs. I have lemon balm in my garden and some lavender to plant.

My flowers include tulips, irises and daylilies. I want some zinnias and sunflowers.

I wish I had a garden, but right now I have a tiny little fenced off "patio" (4' by 6' if that), with a tall-ass fence and small children and small deer to worry about if I plant outside that fence. D:

If anyone knows anything that deer don't like/is "safe" for children, and can be planted on a East-facing wall/in containers in shade, I would love to hear it!

As for you, OP, try some tiger lilies? They definitely add a pop of color, and if you treat them right, they'll show up again and again!

Also, if you're looking for nice smelling things, this site let's you do an advanced search where you can filter out roses by their smell/color, if you like roses?

Are you looking for flowers, herbs, vegetables? The shade is the toughest part. Most veggies and herbs prefer at least a half day of sun. Mint grows well in shade, though and it smells wonderful. Lettuce is easily grown in containers and can tolerate shade.

I'd like some flowers; I wasn't going to get herbs, because I just don't really use them a lot in cooking at this point in time (maybe someday when I have more thyme, but right now...?) I'm thinking about getting a hanging tomato plant, so that it's out of reach of the small children(aren't the leaves bad for people?), but I'm worried about deer. D:

I'll looking to the mint, though. :3

I've heard that deer don't like lavander, but I'm not sure that will grow in the shade.

Is lavender safe around small children?

(My problem is basically that there are between four and six small children that run around our "front yard" at the apartment complex, and have, in the past, creeped in "my" (fenced) area/gone up and peeked in my windows/played with stuff that wasn't theirs, so I'm worried about them getting hurt, and me getting in trouble. ^^;)

Depending on where you are/how hot it gets where you are, violets, violas, and English violas are all good for shade, and some smell good. Violets and English violas are perennials in most places, and violas will self seed in areas with enough winter chill and rain. They'll flower better with some sun, but they don't need a lot and make good ground-cover. Woodland strawberry is like the native American version (actually a couple related species, I think) of the European alpine strawberry. It makes teensy red berries instead of supermarket monster fruit, but it's like the taste of a big strawberry got condensed down into a little tiny fruit. Unlike alpine strawberries, woodland strawberry spreads by runners and doesn't need a lot of sun, so it's another good ground-cover.

I don't know if deer like violets or strawberries, but even if they like both, given the right growing conditions (enough water, mostly) they're hard to kill. If you live in the right climate zone, lily of the valley is pretty, smells nice, is poisonous so deer won't eat it (I doubt kids would either unless you've got toddlers that are at the taste-test everything stage) and also borderline invasive in the right conditions. There's a pink flowered version that's supposed to be less vigorous. It's not cold enough in winter for it to naturalize where I am.

I've never seen that rose site before. helpmefind.com/roses is my go-to rose reference site.

I've got a vegetable bed (spinach, radishes, and peas now, many tomatoes and some peppers later), raspberries and strawberries, and my mom and I share an herb garden.

Totally know those feels. Winter has been terribly long here, and it's still pretty chilly most of the time.

I've got a strawberry patch, a herb garden (cilantro, chives, basil, oregano + mint) a couple of tomato plants, some cukes, and some french beans.

I'm thinking of getting some vegetable seeds and growing peppers and maybe pumpkins. I found some flower pots when I was cleaning out the backyard of random debris so it'd be nice to put something in them.

I'm growing basil, spinach, mint, and cilantro for my bunnies. Also catnip for the cats. Right now the freezing isn't necessarily over for my area, so they're all still inside, and I have the basil in front of the door out to the deck... so I step over/through it to go out back, and then the room smells like pesto.

Not so much as when my bunnies are munching on it, though - then it really makes me want pesto. And when they're eating the mint, it kind of makes my room smell like cookies. =)

Cosmos are easy to grow, too, even in poor soil.

I've had all kinds of things sprouting from seeds in my house for a couple of months. I should be able to plant them outside this week, finally.

Rosemary is really finicky; I've never had good luck with it. Oregano is fantastic.

I make a couple of human sacrifices to the gods of plants and harvest while dancing naked and... J/k.

It depends on what's being grown, but I usually start by putting them in pots.

You should water 'em at least twice a week. Putting a crate under the pot and pouring the water there, letting the earth absorb the water I hear is the best for the plant. Just don't add too much water, or it'll rot.

Place it where it gets light, but not direct sunlight.

And I guess you could read up on agricultural astrology if you wanna.

Best of luck with your plants, OP. <3

My favorite fragrant flowers are sweet peas, night-scented stock, scented dianthus, alyssum, and heliotrope. I also like scented geraniums, tho the flowers usually aren't showy. You can still start the sweet peas from seed (Old Spice Mix is very fragrant) but the rest you should get as starts from a nursery. I've grown all of them in containers, tho the sweet peas will need a trellis or a teepee to climb.
