You know, I don't get where so many people in the Remus/Sirius camp get their IT'S CANON thing. Is it a very interesting and appealing ship? Oh hell yes. Is there a lot of really great fic-provoking potential in the canonical details? Definitely yes. BUT HOW IS IT ALMOST CANON??????? Seriously, where are people getting the idea that the ONLY possible interpretation of them in canon is romantic? Like, can you give me a page number? A chapter? A quote? Something? Hell, they weren't even officially absolute best friends or anything -- James and Sirius were best friends. Or do best friends not count as best friends if one of the two best friends in question is in love with a girl?

For a long time before any ship became canon, it was actually a lot of the same people people who shipped Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny and assumed those were canon. When it turned out that those were canon, a lot of those people backtracked and started shipping Remus/Tonks. But the Almost Canon thing is a holdover from that period.

Also... in fairness, it is really not difficult at all to read Remus as gay. That's not a big stretch or anything.

True. Although, in my mind Sirius is the one I read as bi. Remus could go either way for me. I think he absolutely loves Tonks, so not entirely gay, but maybe bi or somewhere on the closer to gay end of the spectrum.

Actually I misspoke. Should have said that he WAS easy to read as gay, if you were judging only on how he was presented in the early books. I don't think he's actually gay or bi - not in my headcanon anyway - but I can completely understand how someone would have read him that way and where that could come from.

Now, why they'd insist it's canon, that's beyond me

I think some of that came from people thinking Ron was Sirius 2.0, and Hermione was Remus 2.0, although I actually think Ron is more of the James to Harry's Sirius. But that seems to have been the logic.

Right. The whole Harry/Ginny=James/Lily and Remus/Sirius= Ron/Hermione (even though the whole bickering thing Ron/Hermione had going on never showed up in Remus/Sirius). And forget about Peter. Or maybe Neville is Peter. But really he doesn't matter so lets ignore him.

AYRT

I always saw Neville as being more like Remus, except he never got as close to the trio until later in the books, and he was, like Peter, a bit slower.

I just think comparisons are bad. Because I think the members of the Trio were equally close in a way the Marauders never were. In a way you could say that Ron, Harry, and Hermione were all three James and Sirius. Neville, Ginny, and Luna were maybe like Remus in the sense that they were close friends with them but not quite as close.

But really, the comparisons just don't work. There aren't direct comparisons. I wouldn't say Harry is James at all. He's a combination of both of his parents. So there really isn't even anywhere to start with for comparison.
