To clarify, when the series was recced to me it was basically pitched as a show where the magic and dragons and stuff are a HUGE part of the story. IMO, GOT is basically just "the politics of fake Europe", which I don't care about at all. So it may or may not be actual high fantasy, but the description I received was... off. To say the least. (I treat the books as a totally different entity, since I haven't read them.)

I started watching/still watch because I work in a small office and my coworker is constantly talking about GOT. He was talking about it before I started watching, and would continue to talk about it if I stopped, even though I've told him I don't like the show. So I figured I might as well see what he's talking about, since we're stuck together every day. I'm well aware hate-watching is a waste of time, and I'll probably drop it when I get busy again.

I feel you, OP. I would be furious, too, if I slogged through any amount of GoT expecting things to actually be fantastical most of the time and instead got repetitions of "winter is coming" and three dragons aside from all the political crap. And I actually really like political high fantasy with very little or no magic, but I want to be expecting it.

LOL! I got a similar recommendation. I gave up about halfway through the second episode. My favorite part was the theme song and opening sequence. So, uh, congrats on your intestinal fortitude, I suppose.

A lot of people actually thought I wouldn't like the show because I basically hate political dramas.

I guess they forgot about curly-haired, bearded redheads and pretty, pretty costumes...

Yeah, I would be questioning someone's ability to assess something if they claimed GoT was all dragons and magic. I like dragon-and-magic high fantasy (guess why I'm in the Hobbit/LotR fandom?), so the most I have ever dedicated to GoT is reading Wikipedia's synopsis, and reading a fanfic where Ned Stark lives.

I like fantasy for the magic, so ASOIAF is off my reading list.
