The only thing I don't understand here is your definition of high fantasy. GoT fits most definitions I'm familiar with.

I will never understand anyone who hate-watches a show. If you don't like the show, why are you still watching?

It isn't like it has bad production values or anything. It isn't a trainwreck (other than certain choices D&D have made in recent episodes that completely alter a character's values).

If the show angers you that much, stop watching.

Are you under the impression that 'high fantasy' is a reflection of quality somehow? Because the only thing I can guess from what you said.

Also, just because you don't like something doesn't make it crappy. Taste is taste, quality is quality. You can't just declare something crappy because you don't like it personally. How old are you, twelve?

So, I can get your hate, and I can understand you hate!watching.

But...I think you might not know what "high fantasy" actually means. GoT, and ASoIaF, are "high fantasy" in that they take place in an imagined world and are epic in scale. Whether they are good are bad is another matter entirely.

I've finally broken free and given up on this show. It's a shame because it could have been a great show. Given the source material, in the hands of a good showrunner, it could have been a really fantastic show. Instead it's just been... mediocre at best.

I'm curious now because so many people seem to either love or hate GoT as a representation of fantasy. What is your reasoning, OP? What is the reasoning of people here who think it is either an awesome or really shitty example of fantasy?

I watched the first two seasons because everyone was insisting it was great and would just get better. But like partially through I realized I was just hate watching so I just finished up the season and dropped it. Wasn't worth the rage. It was just bad.

GoT, as a lot of other people have pointed out, is in the "low fantasy" category. Whoever recced it to you as high fantasy was just wrong.

IA with your hateboner for the show. I think it's shitty and awful and overrated and needs to die.

But why would you hate-watch it? Why would you give it increased ratings?

To clarify, when the series was recced to me it was basically pitched as a show where the magic and dragons and stuff are a HUGE part of the story. IMO, GOT is basically just "the politics of fake Europe", which I don't care about at all. So it may or may not be actual high fantasy, but the description I received was... off. To say the least. (I treat the books as a totally different entity, since I haven't read them.)

I started watching/still watch because I work in a small office and my coworker is constantly talking about GOT. He was talking about it before I started watching, and would continue to talk about it if I stopped, even though I've told him I don't like the show. So I figured I might as well see what he's talking about, since we're stuck together every day. I'm well aware hate-watching is a waste of time, and I'll probably drop it when I get busy again.

I'm with you, OP. I adore the books, I despise the show, and I still watch it. Although that's mostly because I'm in the fandom and I want to know what people are talking about, and there is no book-only fandom anymore. :/

I'm sad to say I completely understand this. There's one series I hate-read with an excitement that matches reading things I actually love, just so I can get furious at how stupid it is. Granted, this hatred comes from what was once love, turned into disappointment, and bloomed into a kind of fascinated loathing. I can't hate-follow something that has absolutely nothing I like about it; it's (what I consider) ruined potential that keeps me interested.
