Here's the passage (nabbed from Blastr article) and quite frankly, it reads rapey to me. Cersei said 'no' and Jaime ignored her.

She kissed him. A light kiss, the merest brush of her lips on his, but he could feel her tremble as he slid his arms around her. “I am not whole without you.”

There was no tenderness in the kiss he returned to her, only hunger. Her mouth opened for his tongue. “No,” she said weakly when his lips moved down her neck, “not here. The septons…”

“The Others can take the septons.” He kissed her again, kissed her silent, kissed her until she moaned. Then he knocked the candles aside and lifted her up onto the Mother’s altar, pushing up her skirts and the silken shift beneath. She pounded on his chest with feeble fists, murmuring about the risk, the danger, about their father, about the septons, about the wrath of gods. He never heard her. He undid his breeches and climbed up and pushed her bare white legs apart. One hand slid up her thigh and underneath her smallclothes. When he tore them away, he saw that her moon’s blood was on her, but it made no difference.

“Hurry,” she was whispering now, “quickly, quickly, now, do it now, do me now. Jaime Jaime Jaime.” Her hands helped guide him. “Yes,” Cersei said as he thrust, “my brother, sweet brother, yes, like that, yes, I have you, you’re home now, you’re home now, you’re home.” She kissed his ear and stroked his short bristly hair. Jaime lost himself in her flesh. He could feel Cersei’s heart beating in time with his own, and the wetness of blood and seed where they were joined.

wait, this is he scene they're calling rapey?

she said "no" because she didn't want to do it there. she pretty clearly DID want him.

ETA: how different was it in the show?

he says "why did the gods make me love a hateful woman" right before he starts aggressively kissing her and there's a point where it kind of seems like she's kissing him back, but then he grabs at her gown and she keeps saying "no, no, it's not right" etc but he doesn't stop, i think she might've been crying as well but i don't remember. but she was definitely begging him to stop and pushing at him and there was never really any hint of her wanting it, unlike the books where it's clear she wants him to fuck her, but is briefly concerned about doing it in front of their dead son's corpse until she just figures "eh fuck it" and grabs his penis and guides it in.

not so much in the show.

I've also heard that in the book, that scene in the sept is the first time they've seen each other so relief and grief are all mashed together .... whereas in the show that scene takes place after Jamie has been back for weeks (?), and after Cersei's given him the brushoff because he's not a "whole man" anymore. Totally different emotional context.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
yep, forgot to mention that part as well. in the books, it's the first time they've seen each other in months, iirc, and he'd been held prisoner and could've been dead for all she knew, so the first time they saw each other in ages was in that sept with joffrey's dead body lying on its bier. it was grief, desperation, relief, longing, all kinds of emotions at play, and i can definitely see where people would argue that it's dubious consent initially, i think her primary concern is not being caught. she's all for the sex part of it.

wow yeah that's...quite different. a lot different.

they altered something that wasn't rape and made it rape. and it's not like it's the only time they've done it. gah.

The show cut out the part at the end where she's begging him to fuck her.

I think even without that it wasn't clear-cut rape in the book. Even from the very beginning it sounded to me like she wanted it. That bit definitely solidified it as not-rape to me in the book passage, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Eh...even if it was because of the place rather than her rejecting Jaime, she still said 'no' and he didn't listen. The over-the-top begging consent later didn't make it less skeevy to me, because it feeds into the whole "she said 'no' but she really wanted it" nonsense.

I can see where you're coming from. I guess it's vibe. When the "no" is really 100% about that moment of "oh I don't want the septon to see!"...but yeah I see where you're coming from.

I think the biggest problem is that it's still a world of difference from the show. Here, she wants the sex and her only major concern is the time/location, and even that gets brushed aside by the end of the scene and she is a full participant there. Compared to the show, I'd say that's fairly consensual, and even given the context I would say it floats on the edge between dub-con and outright consent.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, if we want to promote the idea that it's right that if someone wants their partner to stop after they had begun consensually... I guess if they're not being coerced into doing so, it's okay to change your mind and agree to have sex. Right?

Wow, and people call this guy a good writer? lol

There's a reason I could only drag myself through the first few pages of the books. The writing is terrible.

(yes, I'm spoiled and a bit of a snob, but it's still terrible!)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh thank goodness I wasn't the only one thinking that. "Her moon's blood was on her?" Someone actually wrote that in a serious novel?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, yeah, that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
You must not read very much, or much variety, if you think that's bad. GRRM's writing can be bad in places, but that phrase isn't too bad in the context. It's a pseudo-medieval society. They have euphemisms like that.

See yesterday's thread. The existence of crappier crap doesn't make crap not crap.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
The guy's writing drags in places but honestly, what exactly is wrong with "her moon's blood was on her"? Periods come once a month, like a full moon, and it conveys what it's supposed to convey - that she's bleeding and Jamie doesn't give a rat's ass.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
Did he ejaculate after a couple of thrusts...?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry. Doesn't sound rapey to me. To me it sounds like she wants to have sex, but just not not there. And then she doesn't care anymore and just wants it. That's how it reads to me.
