I don't think anyone's arguing that Jamie isn't a murdering asshole, just that he's not a murdering asshole rapist.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The two aren't comparable. Jaime pushed Bran from the window not because he's sadistic, but because he knew that if his relationship with Cersei was made public, both their children and themselves would likely be killed. Of course, he could've avoided the whole situation in the first place if he hadn't have been fucking his sister, but that's for another discussion.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I thought he's raped the guy with a wolf. I don't watch GoT.

both their children

Let's be real, Jaime didn't give a flying fuck about his kids till ASOS. He even admits as much. He pushed Bran out the window for his and Cersei's sake.

Sometimes I think the only reason I'm one of the few who're capable of seeing Jaime as the reprehensible bastard he is is because I don't think his actor's all that attractive.

I don't think anyone is arguing that Jaime is a great person. But at that point, he's trying to be a better person than he is, and canonically as a character he universally condemns rape. Pushing Bran out of a window obviously is a horrible thing. But he made a split-second decision to choose Cersei and his own children over some random kid he barely knew. Not saying he should be forgiven for it, but there you go, and raping his sister is a whole separate issue.

There are levels of bad. And rape (especially of a child) is at the very top of the scale for badness. So much so, that in prisons rapists and child molesters are attacked and ostracized by other prisoners (yes, even murderers).

I can't take anyone seriously who is mad that there was an extra rape scene in Game of Thrones. Like, hello. Rape and torture are like 80% of the story, what's one more at this point, seriously. If you're mad about the deviation from the book, or the guy's character "changing" okay, but seriously, all this shock and outrage over rape scenes seems a bit late. As if GRRM would never ever write such a scene as that.

Even Book!Jaimie had standards.

I thought I read somewhere that that scene was supposed to be consensual and the director just effed it up.

That's not even the argument tho? The argument is about what Jaime considers an okay thing to do. Killing someone to protect himself/Cersei/their kids = acceptable. Rape = not so much. It doesn't mean he's awesome or moral or anything. It just means that, based on his previous personality, he hasn't been portrayed as pro-rape. Especially not of Cersei.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters are nuanced. Tony Soprano had no problem murdering people but he loved animals and killed someone over a horse.

Jaime LOST HIS HAND because he protected a woman from being raped.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"This action is out of character for him" =/= "OMG HE'S SUCH A PERFECT MORALLY CLEAN WONDERFUL PERSON WHO WOULD NEVER HURT A FLY"

No one, NO ONE, is saying Jaime is a good guy. Better than most on GoT? Eh, sure, but that's a low bar. No one's saying he's a saint. Just that it made zero fucking sense for him to do that. The sex in that scene was fucked up in the book but not rape. Yeah I get where it can be harder to show Cersei's thoughts on film but they really fucked it up, bad.

I just presume that anyone who appears on GoT is either killed, raped, or rapes someone.

Of course, someone will tell me that I clearly haven't watched the show, and that's fine, because I don't want to for all the rape and murder that I know already exists.

He's a bad guy. He's not a rapist. And people who claim the rape was written to make him more "complex" and "conflicted" are willfully ignoring the fact that that scene was already twisted and interesting in the book. It's like D&D couldn't comprehend how two people could have a troubling, dysfunctional relationship without rape being involved.

I suppose their point is that he was supposed to have changed as a person since he did that to Bran.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the passage (nabbed from Blastr article) and quite frankly, it reads rapey to me. Cersei said 'no' and Jaime ignored her.

She kissed him. A light kiss, the merest brush of her lips on his, but he could feel her tremble as he slid his arms around her. “I am not whole without you.”

There was no tenderness in the kiss he returned to her, only hunger. Her mouth opened for his tongue. “No,” she said weakly when his lips moved down her neck, “not here. The septons…”

“The Others can take the septons.” He kissed her again, kissed her silent, kissed her until she moaned. Then he knocked the candles aside and lifted her up onto the Mother’s altar, pushing up her skirts and the silken shift beneath. She pounded on his chest with feeble fists, murmuring about the risk, the danger, about their father, about the septons, about the wrath of gods. He never heard her. He undid his breeches and climbed up and pushed her bare white legs apart. One hand slid up her thigh and underneath her smallclothes. When he tore them away, he saw that her moon’s blood was on her, but it made no difference.

“Hurry,” she was whispering now, “quickly, quickly, now, do it now, do me now. Jaime Jaime Jaime.” Her hands helped guide him. “Yes,” Cersei said as he thrust, “my brother, sweet brother, yes, like that, yes, I have you, you’re home now, you’re home now, you’re home.” She kissed his ear and stroked his short bristly hair. Jaime lost himself in her flesh. He could feel Cersei’s heart beating in time with his own, and the wetness of blood and seed where they were joined.

IA with the "bad guy but not a rapist" point others have made.

But also, it's a question of when it happens and how it fits in with his story arc. Because paralyzing Bran is not the only bad thing that Jaime ever did. Jaime did a lot of awful shit. Jaime broke his oath and killed a king. Jaime has probably killed a lot of people, many of them probably relatively innocent. But all this stuff happened before Jaime lost his hand, before Jaime met Brienne, and generally before Jaime started having some redeeming qualities.

So without the rape scene, there's a story you can tell, where all that stuff was all the awful shit Jaime did in the past, but now that's over and he's changing and he's becoming a better person. After the change they made, the story is Jaime did some awful shit and tries to be better but then no he's actually just a brutal rapist.

I haven't even read the books and I know what this is about.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-03 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because from what I've heard from many, many people and sources, the reason why people are upset with the rape isn't because "Jaime wouldn't do that" but because he didn't do that in the books. Given that one of the other major instances of a consensual sex scene being turned into a rape turned out to be completely unnecessary and only there to shock people/draw viewers in (Daenerys consented - as much as she could under the circumstances, anyway - to Khal Drogo on their wedding night), this is most likely the same thing, which is why the people I've heard about this from are upset.

Not to mention, there is a fair bit of difference between murder and rape, especially coming from a character who may not hesitate to do what's necessary but has a reputation of doing so only when necessary. (I haven't actually read much of the books and I'm not that caught up on the show - can someone else confirm for me if he actually lives up to this reputation?) I've heard a lot about Jaime's character assassination in the show, and given what I've read and heard about it - even if I don't keep up with the source material myself - I'm inclined to believe it.
