Re: 1st or 3rd person?

It seems first person gets a lot of rage in the writing community, and I really don't know why. It's just a different style of storytelling. I don't see it as inherently better or worse, it just comes with the expectation that we will see more of the thought process of the narrator, instead of a more subtle characterization.

Just depends on the story and style of storytelling. I think either one might be more appropriate in different circumstances.

I didn't realize until recently that there were people who hated first person storytelling. It seemed like a really strange thing to dislike.

Maybe it's easier to do poorly? If the voice is uncertain or if there's a lot of unnecessary exposition, it shows up more in first person? That's my best guess.

Maybe someone who hates 1p will weigh in.

I personally REALLY loathe first person because to me, reading is escapism. I don't want to BE the person, I want to read about someone else's life and all that happens.

Plus, I find that first person tends to be a) really poorly written more often than third person, and b) a 'lazier' way of avoiding fleshed out side characters for some writers.

That makes sense! And I've definitely been personally guilty of using first-person narration to avoid fleshed out side characters. *hangs head in shame*

I hate first person, mostly because I'm so picky about characterization/identifying with characters.

I'm worse about it with fanfiction. The moment a first person story deviates from my expectations of the character, I'm done. At least with third person, it's more removed, so I can attribute a character's actions to something more palatable to me. When it's in first person, there's no wiggle room. For example, someone puts a plate of cookies on a table with a smile on their face. If it's a villain, and they don't normally smile, I can attribute it to something nasty's going to go down. But in first person, if they're "baking cookies for their loved one".. yeah. No. BACKBUTTON!

With original fiction, I have to really, REALLY like a character to stick with a first person story. Love "The Hunger Games" movies, but couldn't stand the books because Katniss annoyed me while I was in her head. But watching the movie, I could see her as a kickass survivor, rather than just another whiny teenager.

Hope that all makes sense. :)

That makes lots of sense, thanks for responding! The "wiggle room" concept is definitely familiar to me. And I felt a similar way about The Hunger Games; I really liked the story concept, but the narration felt off to me. I think first-person has some pitfalls that 3rd doesn't. But some of my long-term favorite books are in first person, so . . .
