1st or 3rd person?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Which do you prefer? (In books, though I guess you could apply this to games as well)

3rd. I don't actually mind 1st all that much, especially for books-on-tape, but 2nd drives me up the wall.

Books: Third.

Games: IDGAF (though I usually play in first.)

It seems first person gets a lot of rage in the writing community, and I really don't know why. It's just a different style of storytelling. I don't see it as inherently better or worse, it just comes with the expectation that we will see more of the thought process of the narrator, instead of a more subtle characterization.

Just depends on the story and style of storytelling. I think either one might be more appropriate in different circumstances.

I didn't realize until recently that there were people who hated first person storytelling. It seemed like a really strange thing to dislike.

Maybe it's easier to do poorly? If the voice is uncertain or if there's a lot of unnecessary exposition, it shows up more in first person? That's my best guess.

Maybe someone who hates 1p will weigh in.

I personally REALLY loathe first person because to me, reading is escapism. I don't want to BE the person, I want to read about someone else's life and all that happens.

Plus, I find that first person tends to be a) really poorly written more often than third person, and b) a 'lazier' way of avoiding fleshed out side characters for some writers.

I am a rare 2nd person booster. At least, I think it's rare.

Between 3rd and 1st, I have no preference, as long as it's done well.

I used to love 2nd pov for fanfic (my first fandom was a niche just for 2nd pov, it as incredibly awesome and well written).

For proper books/literature I think I generally prefer 3rd, but I'm alright with 1st.

When I write fic though, I always feel kind of weird writing in 1st, like my character is going to be completely intolerable and annoying.

It is rare to find someone with a kind word to say for 2nd person. Most people can't seem to condemn it strongly enough--they're almost ragey about it.

Third. But I've enjoyed books in first person. I've only written significantly in third.

Re: 1st or 3rd person?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Third for games. Either for books, though I almost always write in close third person.

Re: 1st or 3rd person?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
3rd person for books, but I like the occassional 1st person. I haven't played a first person game yet. Watching some Let's Plays I always feel like I'm not seeing everything and have trouble telling how close or far the character is to things, so I don't think I'd be comfortable playing one as I'd constantly feel like I was missing things.

Always and forever 3rd person for fanfic though. I've tried it a few times but what I've read just ends up really ooc, the character's thoughts being the writers thoughts instead of their own.

Forever yes to this.

Third. Both reading and writing. It's more objective than first and allows you to get into multiple characters' heads.

I like first when it's told from the perspective of a really complex, interesting character. I have a friend who wrote up a short story about a character with multiple personalities who wasn't aware of it. First person was really effective.

Depends on how well the writer pulls it off.

Whichever fits the story.

Re: 1st or 3rd person?

I tend to prefer third, but first person can do different things, so it really depends what the author is trying to do. I don't really read much second person because there isn't much out there, but I do like writing in it.

Both are fine, in principle, if used right.

However, after reading a bunch of creepypasta lately, I have to say, re: first person...

If you're going to kill off your first person narrator at the end of the story, you'd better damn well have a good explanation as to how they're telling us the story planned. Because 'and, now I'm dead' destroys the verisimilitude that first person narration is meant to create.

(Also, having read a couple of the Harry Dresden books - your first person narrator better be someone whose head I want to spend the whole book in, rather than wanting to smack them repeatedly.)

I like reading 3rd person more, but I am not totally against 1st, if it's a good story. 2nd can be an interesting effect, but more often than not any 2nd person that I see around is Character/Reader, which feels skeevy to me.

Games... Well I'm not a huge gamer and most of what I have played is 3rd person perspective.

However if you're talking about RP, I tend to avoid 1st person RPers because the skeevy feeling I get about Character/Reader fics I also get with 1st person RPers. I don't mind if it's just trading comments In Character, but when it comes to narrating, a reply of "I do this to you" feels creepy, like they're doing it to Mimi Sardinia, not Kizár. Kizár may be my character, but I am not that deeply embedded in her POV.

3rd and past tense writing. Nothing is more painful to read than 1st person present tense writing. Although it does provide a handy flag that the story is inherently shit so I don't waste my time with it.

I dislike 1st. Not to the point where I'll never read it, but I dislike it. I also generally dislike books/stories that switch back and forth amongst different POVs...
