Or maybe, just maybe, the whole point of a comments section and anon secrets is so that a person can honestly reply with how they feel about a secret. Maybe. Possibly. Who knows? Could be.

Like, yeah, they get why it's a secret, that doesn't mean they shouldn't respond to why the secret is wrong/stupid/etc.?

I don't think you understand how the comments section and opinions work. You're free to post whatever secret you want anonymously. The people here are allowed to agree or critique the secret however they please. That's the point.

To me, because lots of secrets are "confessions," the comments are often an absolution of sorts -- of the "It's okay, anon, no need to feel so ashamed!"

No. I mean, yes, but no. Like, if that's how people react to your secret, okay, that's what you get. But our comment sections are less like confessing to a room of sympathetic therapists or friends and more like shouting random shit at curious drinkers in a bar. Some people will pat you on the back and offer you a beer. Others will tell you to shut up. Others still will try to fight you.

But... yeah, I feel the comments aren't for the secret-maker. They're for the commenters. Therefore, the commenters can react however they want. In turn, other commenters can remark on what the first commenter said however they want. Our conversation here is a great example of that. I called out the OP on what I believe to be bullshit. Next, you are telling me that your view is different from mine and more in line with the OP. Now I'm defending my position of believing that viewpoint is flawed. This is normal for F!S. We're not here to tell a secret they're okay, or good, or even bad. We're here to simply react in whatever way is natural to us and somehow gain entertainment from that. Because, really, if we didn't enjoy ourselves we wouldn't be here.

That was awesome, I think you've totally hit the nail on the head about this. If a secret maker wanted to feel better about their secrets, they're better off telling a therapist or a sympathetic friend. This is f!s. We have known resident trolls.

Yeah, I've actually been looking at getting a new therapist because she has actually shot me down every time I try to discuss my polyamory curiosity with her. She was very passive aggressive in her dismissal of the topic, to boot. That's just the latest therapist. I had another who had a breakdown of her own when her office burned down, and getting my antidepressants refilled was a royal bitch. So I'd disagree in some cases with at least half of that statement.

I don't know. I've seen some comments that some may consider trolls to be easier to stomach than some of the stuff I've heard come from my therapists.

I'd say about 25-30% of them qualify for that descriptor, especially since the term "therapist" can include people who don't even have a Master's degree in a relevant field. The examples I previously stated had earned their doctorates and are licensed by the states in which they practice(d). If we broaden the scope to look at those who do not have doctorates, we're gonna come up with more examples (including plenty not technically accountable to the state or other regulatory agency that could at least reduce the number of dangerous/incompetent therapists out there.

Um, but I'm still not exactly sure how we disagree, exactly. I feel like we're talking past each other a bit. Because that fact doesn't contradict what I said so... um. Where are we? I'm sorry that I'm confused.

I was trying to say that I don't necessarily think that some of the commenters here are any worse than friends and shrinks. I think all parties can be equally judgmental and supportive. Your original comment suggested to me that friends and therapists are more inclined to be supportive, while my position is that from what I've observed/experienced that's not necessarily true. I also find that what many people would consider trolling I actually find myself agreeing on occasion.

I suppose, for me, I believe that some people here are friends but most are strangers. I feel like the probability is that strangers have a higher likelihood of being unsympathetic to a secret than a friend or therapist. Now, this isn't always the case, as your examples clearly outline. I just think it's a higher likelihood.

So... I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. And I'm sorry about the shitty therapists you've run into. I hope you find someone better.

Tonight I learned FandomSecrets is Callahan's Crosstime Saloon.

I did not know what this was so I looked it up on wikipedia.

The bar is run by Mike Callahan. The regulars are welcoming and willing to listen to any visitor's problems, no matter how strange, but do not snoop if a visitor is unwilling to share. Strange and unusual events and visitors turn up with frequency in the stories. Regulars at Callahan's include a talking dog, several extraterrestrials and time travelers, an ethical vampire, a couple of Irish mythological beings, and an obscenity-spewing parrot. The stories make heavy use of puns. Irish whiskeys are the preferred beverage, with Tullamore Dew and Bushmills mentioned in nearly every collection of shorts or novel that references the saloon.

Agreed, I do think there's no one answer to "why do people post secrets" and "why do people comment," but I've come to believe that in both halves there are those who see what they post / the comments that result as a form of performance art.
