Huey does come off a bit brash in these strips, but it plays off of how white washed Tom is. While Huey has a major disdain for most of black culture, he is still proud of his people and race, and sees Tom's somewhat denial and giving that to his daughter as well as disappointing.

It's more a satirical reflection that the middle doesn't feel like enough to some people and being forced to choose, which Jasmine has as a real struggle.
