I am full of admiration for this bear and for this gif

It's probably not a coincidence that the black guy married to a white woman is named Tom either.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dubois family is definitely pretty... broad. At best. And a lot of the humor with them does come out of stereotypes. So that's definitely something.

But I don't think you're supposed to take stuff Huey says as the word of God. He can be just as crazy as anyone else, esp in the TV show. So the shit he says, it's not like the strip is saying that's the way it is.

It does seem like the humor in the pictured strips is at the girl's expense rather than the boy's.

Does the fandom generally think it's a good representation, is that why this is a secret? I've never watched/read The Boondocks so that's why I'm asking.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Very few things on FS are there because they're actually secret, they're there because people want to discuss it.

I kind of agree? But I also don't think Huey is supposed to be an entirely reliable narrator / perspective character.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If there's any character meant to represent the author's views it's him. I don't think I've ever seen him be the butt of a joke like other characters.

I don't get the jokes in either of those strips? Or is the joke that Huey is a self absorbed asshole, because I can see that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much how the Boondocks is.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
How so? Is it really blatant or something more subtle that you have to watch a few episodes to see? My impression was that it exaggerated those sorts of things to make a joke of them, and usually made a point of showing it was a false/wrong idea or attitude by the end of the episode.

I'm only passing familiar with the show though as I usually half-watched it while waiting for the show after and the only thing that really stood out was that "Dropping the Soap in Prison" dream from one of the few episodes I saw the way through.

From the couple of strips here, it seems pretty funny to me, but there is likely a lot of context I lack because I don't read it or watch the show.

You're joking, right? You DO realize that bi-racial people/families still get a lot of shit from both sides? The Boondocks addresses the issue with the same dark (no pun intended) humor and satirical social commentary as it does with everything else. I highly doubt their depictions are the actual, legitimate views of the creator; in fact, I'm pretty sure he's showing the sort of shit bi-racial families and people go through and NOT condoning it at all.

Guessing you've not read past these and seen where Huey actualls speaks to Tom about how they constantly try and play down the African American features in Jasmine?
Huey does come off a bit brash in these strips, but it plays off of how white washed Tom is. While Huey has a major disdain for most of black culture, he is still proud of his people and race, and sees Tom's somewhat denial and giving that to his daughter as well as disappointing.

Wait, are we supposed to be thinking The Boondocks is politically correct? I thought the entire point of the show (not familiar with the comic strips that came before it) is that the creator is 'allowed' to portray African-Americans the way he does because he's black. It's the black, inner-city kid version of The Wonder Years.

All of these white tears and not enough buckets to hold them.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Just because something about Black culture doesn't relate to you personally doesn't make it "racist." The long and short of it is this, in many ways, it is considered a step up to date outside of your race. A lot of bullshit comes with that. A lot of Black men who go for trophy White women can be seen as Uncle Toms. A lot of the Black women who go for White men could be seen as yet another "slave" sleeping with "massa."

The mentality sticks, because that's where it started. Although the physical chains are gone, the lingering effects of slavery and racism are everywhere. Therefore, biracial relationships, and the children produced from them, are never going to be seen without some kind of damning filter attached.

I both understand this mentality to some degree and disregard it, because I enjoy dating outside of my race. However, as a Black person, you have to accept the fact that you will be criticized for dating within a group of people that have done literally everything in their power to hold Black people down.

Is it nice to criticize other people's relationships? Nope, but it will be done by White people, too. It is not just Black people who have ugly things to say. After all, it wasn't Black people who wrote and passed laws that it was illegal for Black people and White people to marry. Furthermore, it's not Black people who are much more likely to disown or stop speaking to someone in a mixed race relationship. Chatter aside, Black folks will let you bring much more whomever you're dating around, regardless of skin color.
