Bread

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
So, I was planning to try some of that whole-grain/multi-grain bread crammed full of seeds and nonsense because it's supposed to be better from a blood sugar perspective, and I'm not really excited about it. But I'm going to try it because I haven't tried it since I was a kid, and there are a lot of things I've turned around on in 25 years.

BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY. NOT EVEN OUR BIG FANCY SUPERMARKET. I'm going to try the tiny unfancy downtown non-chain market but assuming I'm not limited to just one option (or no option) what are some breads y'all recommend?

American?

As in, you must be American? Seeing as you get multi-seed wholemeal even in the chavviest supermarkets in Britain.

Re: Bread

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
you can also get it in any supermarket where i am in america

fuck you

...Except the OP can't and is also, apparently, American.

You're reading way too much into my comment, anon.

If it would make you feel better, here's a list of some of the UKs shopping inadequacies when compared to America:

-fashion, we have smaller ranges available and your awesome styles take a full year to peter down to the UK
-makeup, ours might as well be in the dark ages in comparison
-haircare products available, allergic to a mainstream ingredient? Don't bother looking here for it, you'll have to get anything alternative shipped from the states anyway!

But we do have multiseed bread, much good may it do me. ;)

Yes. We've got 100 percent whole wheat out the ass, but whole grain, not so much.

Re: Bread

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is a pretty stupid assumption you're making here.

Re: Bread

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Almost every Brit has access to an Asda - the chavviest supermarket. Asda does own brand bread like the anon is looking for. Those areas of the UK without a supermarket nearby could hardly be frustrated about the lack of something in a supermarket as the OP....

Which leads me to American.

I didn't mean anything by it. Just fascinated. Sorry if it came across rude.

What, really? They're at my big fancy food place. Well... they're everywhere. The bread, I mean. Did you ask someone who works there where half of their bread section went?

And, the bread tastes good so I wouldn't worry about that.

Oh man, it's everywhere down here and I doubt we have the greatest selection either. But there's always at least four or five different kinds of whole-grain or multi-grain bread. Hmm... Guess you just got unlucky.

Hopefully you find some you like! Good luck on your search!

I can't help you on the supermarket bit. But I'm totally willing to vouch for whole-grain bread being good. I think it's tastier.

Me, too. I don't really like white bread anymore. I just wish it were easier to find whole grain hamburger buns where I live.

the Big Sky Bread Company makes an organic three-seed bread that's pretty good, though it can be dry. It's a franchise, with stores in a lot of states.

Rudi's Organic Bakery makes a Harvest Seeded bread, a Spelt & Ancient Grains bread that also has flax, sesame, and sunflower seeds, and a Super Seeded bread with 6 different kinds (they don't say what they are). Here's the website--see if there's a distributor near you. (They make gluten-free stuff too.)

IDK, these are the main ones I can reliably get in my part of Iowa. If there's a co-op in your vicinity and you have a way to store bulk purchases, it might be worth your while to make a pilgrimage there now and then to stock up.

Oh, and I forgot that Food For Life company that makes sprouted-grain breads with names like Ezekiel 4:9. They also make one called Genesis 1:29 with sprouted grains and seeds.

If you've got a Costco near you, I highly recommend Inkeeper's 8 grain bread. I'm a little puzzled that you don't have ANY options, though.

Re: Bread

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Heck, they carry it at Wal-mart around here.

Re: Bread

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
You could try baking your own, if you have the time to spare? That way, you can throw in the stuff you like and leave out the stuff you don't? (Though I don't know about the whole-grain flour situation in American supermarkets. I'm from the country of sourdough and whole-grain breads, so not getting it anywhere sounds kind of terrible to me.)

Re: Bread

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
this. and baking your own bread is not hard to do. It's just very time-consuming to mess around with yeast.

If you can't find multi-grain, get whole wheat. In fact, try to get whole wheat generally.
