Yes, how surprising that a group of people don't like being lumped together as rapists/murderers/abusers.

You know, my sister works at a casino and her boss (Native American) sexually harasses her. Somehow she manages not to think all Native Americans are sexual harassing asswipes (even though the tribal justice system discourages people from reporting problems caused by members of the tribe).

I think the point is that a lot of people, instead of discussing the issue, make it about them.

It would be like if your sister was talking about her situation with her boss, and some guy said, "hey, not all men sexually harass women, you know."

Sure, but there's a difference though between saying "men rape people" and "this particular guy raped this particular person", especially considering many of the issues I've seen using men as a blanket term aren't exclusive to one gender.

You've already made it about them. You don't get to complain that they then take offence because intent isn't magic, and if you don't want people to think you're talking about them, don't use a blanket term they're a part of?

I get that expecting someone to think two seconds about what they're posting is tone policing, but really now.

People make blanket statements. It's a mental shortcut. Our brains aren't going to start working a different way just because some people get offended and think that someone is always talking specifically about them.

The real problem is when people don't have enough self-awareness to realize when they're making a shortcut, and start to transform it into bigotry; or when people get offended when a blanket statement is made that includes them while going around making blanket statements about others.

Well, no. Because when my sister talks about her situation she specifically says her boss is doing it and doesn't go around bashing men or Native Americans as a group.

For real, is it that big of a surprise people get offended when you insult a group they're a part of?

Some feminists do the same exact thing when you bring up bad things feminists have done or say stuff like "they're not actually feminists" when they're still using the label and giving feminism a bad name.

Based on your last sentence, I can't completely tell what you're going for. Are you saying that it's okay to make generalities if members of a group have actually done bad things, and that feminists are hypocrites because they respond the same way men do?

I think the feminists that pull the "not all men" thing are hypocrites if they complain about people making generalizations about feminism.

I'm not against generalizations based on groups for convenience, but I do think people need to consider their audience and how they'll react based on those generalizations, especially on a public forum like the internet.
