I haven't encountered a single SJW in my real life, only on Tumblr and only indirectly. I think you're exaggerating their influence.

But even those people on Tumblr are real people, who can have real influence. Especially when their group grows in numbers. Even important people have to consider an opinion when it's said loudly enough.

That is a valid point, but I think 98% of "those people" don't behave the same way IRL as on Tumblr.

(I don't know how loudly this particular opinion is being said, so I might be wrong here.)

What about the Twitter mob that got Justine Sacco(sp?) fired? They may not do those things IRL but they certainly are starting to have RL influence.

Considering what her job (PR) was and the fact that she told a joke on Twitter for the world to see linking Africa and AIDS that was tasteless and crass, I'd say she deserved to get canned.

I'd say you're right, considering 98% of them seem to have crippling social anxiety and PTSD triggered by the sight of lamp posts. If they ever leave the house, they probably keep to themselves so they can judge everyone from their corner.

My friend was convinced to join their cult and cut off ties with everyone (including me).

That's bad to hear about your friend, care to elaborate on what exactly happened? (Out of curiosity, feel free to ignore)

Best friends since kindergarten. When I went off to college she stayed back home. She started playing WoW (as I did) but she mostly hung out on RP servers (which I hate).

So she got into a guild and became friends with some of them. Started talking to them out of WoW and meeting some of them IRL. Well, many of them were SJWs.

So she started posting SJW BS on tumblr and such. Talking about it all the time (I talk to her on FB) and getting upset over every little thing.

There were three big things that made her cut off all ties to me. The first was that she was mad I was not fighting with her. When we had debates about certain topics, we would both be really engaged. Well, after the SJW stuff she started getting more sensitive and offensive. Eventually, I just started giving up when we tried to debate stuff (I'd end with a terse "Okay." or "Fine.") because I did not want to get her more mad.

The second was (and I hope this doesn't out me) was that she posted this little thing about Lil' Cricket. Lil' Cricket is a crappy southern gas station (you know the type). Well, there used to be this jingle for Lil' Cricket that EVERYONE knew because it played on the radio over and over again (http://youtu.be/J3GcXBERbTM).

I reblogged her post and added the song's lyrics (because the song is funny). About 15 minutes later she messages me all, "You need to delete that post." I was confused but did so. She then tells me that one of her SJW friends told her that the Lil' Cricket was racist. I asked her why, and she said because cricket was a racial slur for black people and that the cricket logo is obviously black face.

Well, I looked around on the internet and found that yes, cricket was once a racial slur in like the 20s...in the Midwest. And the logo (to me) was always just a knock off Jiminy Cricket (hence the name Lil' Cricket). I also couldn't find ANYTHING supporting her statement and I told her that. She got all huffy so I just dropped as usual.

The third and final straw is something I don't even remember. She reblogged some post about Martin Freeman and I reblogged and added a comment (I don't remember what the post was about or what I said). She messages me on Tumblr pissed and told me to delete my reblog and "Why did I have to add anything to the conversation?"

Well, she then decided to tell me all about how she needed a safe place and that she didn't like that I gave up fighting with her and how terrible I acted/thought. She blocked me on Tumblr and has not spoken to me on FB since.

So she got mad at you for not wanting to argue with her? O__o

No, I get it, that was part of the relationship. They enjoyed their debates. Until they became stressful for OP and she didn't want to have what used to be a fun debate and was now a taxing actual argument

But the process of her descent into the brainwashed state must've been terrible to watch - I don't know, maybe she'll bounce back? There are ex-Scientologists who are decent people and acknowledge they acted like total crazy dicks for a portion of their life ...

I've met someone who actually thinks that way.

And I've had some friends bring up stuff they've heard from those circles.

So they obviously have some reach.

It depends on where you live. If you are in an average town in the US, there's a good chance you will never run into one. Or if you do, you will never know because they keep their rants to the internet. However, if you live in say Williamsburg, Brooklyn or Portland then your chances of running into one jumps greatly.

Good point and based on the other replies - Yep, I guess I underestimated their influence. I suppose as long as their values keep getting valorized by others of the same persuasion, the SJWs grow bolder.

I can only think of one off of the top of my head IRL. She was my roomie in freshman year of college and she slowly turned into one. I kind of stopped talking to her after that because she was turning kind of awful aside from the SJW-ness. But other than her, I can't think of anyone else I know who's like that offline. I have other pretty pro-social justice friends but they're the good kind. So yay!

I guess it is like joining a cult ... based on yours and the other experiences mentioned I'm beginning to think I underestimated them.

I've encountered social workers like them. Minus the bad attitude/potty mouths of course. These encounters have always been most unpleasant. SJWs are basically the next generation of social workers to oppress people in the name of "helping" them (via codependence/nanny-state).

Social workers? Oh man, that's bad.

Oooh, I'd love to hear stories if you're up for that.
