I thought it was cute, but I definitely think it's one of the weaker Ghibli movies.

I thought it was boring. Very, very boring. It is actually my least favorite Ghibli movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded. Dull, dull, dull, and lacking an actual ending.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Still ahead of The Wind Also Rises in my book as it doesn't make a merchant of death in the real world a main character.

I thought the movie was more pretty than anything, with all the aquatic life and scenery and stuff. My favorite characters were Sasuke's mom and Ponyo's dad if that says anything. Ponyo herself was indeed kind of a brat at times.

You should check out the Nostalgia Critic's review of the movie, it's very funny and will let you see the movie in a new way, lol.

I liked Ponyo, but it was dull. And unfortunately, I've bee feeling that way about the last several Ghibli films.

The Wind Rises was fucking terrible.

She's a guppie. I just figure she lacks the brain capacity to understand things like that. Kinda fits in with the whole theme of 'Nature doesn't give a fuck.'

I think you may be over thinking that.

I felt a bit the same. If that's supposed to endear us because it's like a kid, it's more like the kids I can't stand.
As opposed to the ones who at least get parents telling them "You may not know yet, but you're not supposed to do things like that".

So, yeah.
Though I don't remember details exactly, because I was also very bored for the most part.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't agree more. Ponyo was unbearable.

I love this movie but it's very much whimsy/cuteness and without as strong a storyline as.many of the other Ghibli movies.
Mostly I like it because the whole "ham" thing is pretty much memetic in our household.

Aw, I thought it was cute. I don't remember enough about it though to decide if I agree or disagree on your assessment of Ponyo.

It was just cute, though - not with the same depth as Howl or Spirited Away.

And I really need to watch the rest of the Ghibli movies. it's just that that involves sitting down and watching a movie

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't remember the plot of this movie, but it wasn't one of my favorites, either. The animation was sort of cute, but I found Ponyo's portrayal to be slightly... well.. unsophisticated? It's not because she's a child because obviously Studio Ghibli has a lot of movies featuring children as protagonists. She just seemed especially clumsy and I never warmed to her or the story.

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-05-11 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeahh, I suppose you are right. I think I just accepted the in-universe rules and hence failed to notice the fact that the protagonist would be unlikeable IRL.

Which is weird, considering the fact that I can barely tolerate most children.

I hated it too. I was technically forced to watch it because my Japanese teacher at the time knew some of the people who worked on the movie, and he set up a special screening for us before it was released in Japan.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This was definitely one for the really little kiddies, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, opinions.

I agree that it's one of the weaker Studio Ghibli films, but I still thought it was cute.

People loved Ponyo? I thought it was generally agreed to be one of the worst Ghibli films. For the record, I thought it was terrible, too.

I liked the movie okay (ranks pretty low on my Ghibli list, though), but I really could do with a re-imagining of The Little Mermaid where the mermaid's desires don't cause so much collateral damage. Like, can't she be smart about getting to live on land, for once, instead of flailing around until everything goes to shit?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
On the spoiled brat thing... It's no different than Disney's Little Mermaid. Both acted childish and disobeyed and disrespected their fathers and then magically everything is happily ever after in the end, no consequences what-so-ever. :/

I was more weirded out about the mom who left her kid alone during a hurricane. A little kid, no less.

Ponyo's dad was hot though (especially as voiced by Liam Neeson)

I was considerably disturbed by the implications that the sea goddess must have had her eggs fertilized, by a human male, in the manner of a fish.
