cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

What even? Huh?

Never mind. I'll just thank you for making me want to play Riviera/Yggdra again.

I hate it when a gameplay is so difficult that it stands in the way of enjoying a game and actualy accessing its content. I feel that I should be good enough in playing the moment I purchased it.

I couldn't finish an old game called Allods for the life of me, even with cheats. It was sad.

I have never heard someone say "__ ate ___'s lunch" before.

I don't think it's odd to prefer a more approachable game to one that is more true to the them but overly difficult. After a certain point difficult becomes frustrating and not fun.

same, I've heard "ate ____ for lunch", but not this version.

It's got an Urban Dictionary entry, so it can't be that rare. Actually, it has an Investopedia entry, too, which kind of amazes me. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/e/eatingoneslunch.asp

I'm still stuck on this game years after it came out. I got myself into a hard spot
(I can't progress because I sacrificed the wrong person) so I may need to restart. I agree though, they make you think about every party member. I also really love Riviera which was another in the Dept Heaven series. Their combat system again was about sacrifice and tactical planning with weapons, which I loved.

Huh. This secret makes me want to try Dark Souls even more now. I passed on it because it seemed like it was too punishing for my tastes, but the more I read about it, the more balanced it seems to be. I'm not the poster girl for hard work, but I like a challenge sometimes.

I think it's best in the middle. In the beginning, you don't have a lot of power, and since you're allowed to proceed in a lot of different directions, you can easily walk into situations you're not prepared for. In the end, the difficulty curve gets a little too steep, and you fight a couple bosses who're annoyingly overpowered. Still, it never gets completely unfair, and because the game's so open-ended, if you're stuck on one boss you can usually try others and level up a bit.

(Okay, maybe those two archers in Anor Londo on that dangerously tiny catwalk are unfair.)

P.S. There is one warning that the game does not emphasize enough, and it's one that can really affect your enjoyment. Fights with big, slow bosses get SO MUCH EASIER if you never carry more than 25% of your maximum carrying capacity, so you're not encumbered and can more easily dodge out of the way of their attacks. (The handiest ring in the entire game is the one that lets you wear heavier armor without being slowed down.)

Yeah, that's the impression I got from playthroughs, that you gotta be careful what you wander into and that too much weight really screws you up in a game where quick dodging isn't remotely optional. I usually like to take the direct approach in a game and let tough armor protect me, but I'd be hopping around like a jackrabbit in my skivvies in Dark Souls until I could get the proper armor.
