Exactly what it says. I've been listening to Wynonna's cover of Burning Love and her voice just fits the song so perfectly. Something about her deep, husky voice just makes the song stand out.

I also prefer The Birds cover of My Back Pages over Bob Dylan's original.

sinead o'connor's cover of prince's nothing compares to u (but i'm biased; i hate prince).

tricky's cover of public enemy's black steel.

fever ray's cover of nick cave's stranger than kindness (and that's a big compliment to fever ray because i love nick cave).

on the other hand, i don't think nirvana's cover of the man who sold the world is better than the original. but again, i'm biased; i'm a rabid bowie fan.

Halestorm's version of Get Lucky. Both are good, but I'm more of a rock fan than electronic/dance/whatever the hell daft punk actually is.

Pretty much every Britney Spears song sounds amazingly better as a punk rock and/or metal cover. My friend's band did an awesome metal version of Circus.

The Dinosaur Jr version of Just Like Heaven

Also, I don't think it's better, but I'm really fascinated by the Kevin Rowland version of Thunder Road. He strips out most of the car imagery, which is a ton of the song obviously, and almost turns it into an old school crooner thing. It's a lot of strange decisions.

Agreed on you with Burning Love. It's the only Elvis song I like to begin with, and she makes me like it more than he ever did.

I still love the original and older covers, but I really love the Me First and the Gimme Gimme's cover of Who Put the Bomp.

And I Wanna Hold Your Hand sung in Across the Universe.

Obadiah Parker's "Hey Ya" - I love the Outkast version too, but the cover makes it a very different song.

My father once told me people tend to like the first version of a song they hear better than any version they ever hear afterward. This has proven to be completely true for me. So there are a whole damn lot of covers I prefer to the originals. In one case, I tried for years to get used to the original (mostly because the cover I liked wasn't on iTunes) and just...never could.
