I never watched a single episode of Care Bears but I honestly think the world would be different if the Walt Disney Company could fully embrace the concept of an antagonist whose motive isn't BEING EVIL FOR THE SAKE OF BEING EVIL.

How many Disney villains do you think fit that description? Not a rhetorical question meant to tell you you're wrong, by the way. I'm seriously thinking about this now. I feel like most of them were after some personal gain, not just to fuck everything up for other people just because they could.

I actually did the count a few days ago, and IIRC the only Disney antagonists who had noble motives are the lot from Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear. The case might or might not also be made for Silver from Treasure Planet, since his one big decision hinges on that as well.

My memory might be faulty, though.

Watch it again; it's not terrible. It's cheesy, in that inevitable "This is an 80s animated movie about The Power Of Friendship" kind of way, but it's not actually bad.

Came here to say this. Granted, it's been a long while since I last saw it but this is basically how I remember it.

Also this is a really sweet secret.

[personal profile] caffeine_buzz 2014-05-15 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I rewatched it a year or so ago (we had some kind of cable channel preview and when I saw it was airing I was like "Oh, dude, I can't not watch the Car Bears movie, my childhood hello") and it's really not that bad for what it is. Don't go in expecting an objective masterpiece or anything, but as far as cheesy 80s movies go it's a decent watch and the songs are catchy. It's basically just about as good as one can reasonably expect a Care Bears movie to be.

THIS.

It's as campy as all those 80's movies haha.

I have gotten to the point in my fanfic life where I will read fics about characters and pairings I don't care about just for a theme or scenario. And they are ones I can't find in original fiction.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-14 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that movie, in a kiddie nostalgia kind of way.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen that movie, but that background is beautifully painted. Almost as good a classic animation, such as Pinocchio.

A Care Bears secret that isn't about Darkheart? Continue to surprise me, F!S ♥

And I guess I better go watch some Care Bears movies now. I feel like I missed out on something meaningful I should have seen rerun during my childhood.

No Dark Heart?

katarik: Care Bears II: ANG: Dark Heart holding crystallized Christy (I care!)

The Care Bears movies make me happy in my soul even when I bang my head against a wall trying to make worldbuilding.(Shush, I like my overthinking ways.)

Honestly, it's not a bad movie. It's cheesy, yes, you know how it's going to end, but I don't think it's bad and I rewatched it most recently two months ago. (I'm 26 and only saw it a couple of times as a kid.)

The Care Bear Nutcracker is... less good, but Care Bears in Wonderland just makes me grin, and Care Bears II -- I can't actually be rational about Care Bears II. Nicholas' movie is actually pretty good about reasons people might be lonely and angry. (The original Care Bears feature, Land Without Feelings, is also good about it, but is *much* less pretty. Also doesn't feature music. YMMV.)

Plus Dark Heart/Christy was the first pairing I ever shipped, long before I knew what shipping even was

I loved Care Bears in Wonderland SO MUCH as a kid. I watched that movie over and over, I still remember the songs by heart. Oddly, I'm not sure I ever even watched any other Care Bears movies, or the show. The only Care Bears thing I remember is Wonderland.

This is reminding me I really need to rewatch Care Bears in Wonderland again sometime. I always remember that one as being the only Care Bears movie I know for sure I saw in a theater, but it doesn't seem to show up randomly on cable as often as the first two movies so it's been an age since I've seen it. I'm curious how that one holds up.

Every voiceover is too Canadian to be purely evil anyway.

My husband likes to pretend he's evil, but being Canadian is, like, 1000 points in the other column against being evil.

That same villain made a big impression on me, too. I haven't seen it as an adult, so I have no idea if it holds up, but you're not alone in finding that character memorable.
